Let me introduce you to my late grandmother, her name is Sophie (Valtille) Roberts aka the Angry French Woman. I never knew how she acquired her nickname, and my father never told me. The only thing I can imagine is that she was angry all the time and cussing people out in French, her native tongue. Sophie married Emile Roberts (my grandfather) and they settled in Lehigh, Oklahoma and moved into a farmhouse and raised cows, chickens, pigs. The house that they lived in had a strange history. The local sheriff of the town was arrested for the murder of a well-to-do local. The motive for the killing was for the money. With the blood money the crooked sheriff acquired, he built a home with that blood money. The home that my grandmother Sophie and grandfather Emile lived in with their children. Sophie and Emile had 3 children, my father Paul Marceau Roberts, my aunt Yvonne (Leaird) Roberts and my uncle George Roberts. On this farm, the Roberts family kept very busy attending to their farm animals and their crops. In fact, my father at the age of 12 years old, was flying dust croppers. Lehigh, Oklahoma has a very dark history. At one point of time, the KKK would hold rallies in this town. It was known that gangster Pretty Boy Floyd would sometimes hideout in Lehigh, Oklahoma. The main job that at one time you could get instantly, is the job of a coalminer. The landscape of Lehigh is very strange. As you walk on these green hills, you will come across huge holes in the ground. These holes are called “strip pits”. Most of them have water inside and you can see water snakes swimming around inside the strip pits. During the coal mining heyday, many lives were lost in these mines. The miners that survived accidents in the mines, would sometimes receive serious injuries. My grandfather, my grandfather’s brother, my dad and my uncle George all did some coal mining. My dad for a while even became a grave digger for miners who lost their lives working the coal mines.

My uncle George told me that the land is haunted by the coal miner spirits. Uncle George would tell me that on several occasions he has seen a dark figure of a miner standing outside at night, watching the house. When I went to Lehigh with my mom and dad, I had a very strange first night at the house. My dad went outside of the house and took me by my arms and shook me. Come to find out, I was sleep-walking. I actually got out of bed and started walking outside. When I woke up, I saw my dad’s face and felt him holding my arms. My dad says to my mom…”Rose, Dale was sleep-walking!” That was the first time I ever slept walked and I was able to remember a woman in a gold flowing gown beckoning me to come outside. When I was walking outside the horses in my grandmother’s stable were going crazy. I never slept walked again, my only time was at my grandmother’s house. The next day was 4th of July 1963, and I was playing with my cousins Lanette, Paul, Allan and Larry Leaird and I heard a male voice in my ear. The voice said…”you will be bit!” As I ran through the grass, I was literally eaten by chiggers aka Berry Bugs. My legs, chest and arms had tiny red marks all over. I couldn’t understand why the chiggers only attacked me. My cousins were not bit. Later on in the evening, we were shooting off firecrackers. The male voice said in my ear…”watch your hands!” As I was lighting up black cat firecrackers, one stayed on the palm of my hand and blew up in my hand. I was in horrible pain and screaming. My parents ran over to me and gave me first aid. That was the end of my fun with firecrackers.

My father was a big skeptic, so when I told him I saw ghosts, he laughed. Fortunately, my uncle George was a believer of ghosts and had experienced seeing ghosts in the house. My uncle would tell me that he would hear disembodied footsteps in the house. He would see the shadowy figure outside of the house, watching the house. George also would see a floating figure of a woman outside of the house. Uncle George told me that he once saw his coffee cup move across the table. George has seen strange blue lights flash brightly in the back of the house. Cold spots are sometimes felt by George and Sophie. George told me that on 3 different occasions, he has smelled rotting flesh. George says that some of the most scariest things that occur near the house is the disembodied screaming heard in the fields. George believes that these are the screams of miners that have lost their lives. My cousin Paul became Mayor of Lehigh and during his time as Mayor, he received reports from the locals about the screams that could be heard in the fields. The locals wanted the screams to stop, but if the screams are paranormal, it’s hard to make residual energy go away. The screams continue on to this day according to locals from Lehigh. George says at times he heard strange clicking sounds in the house and the horses and the dogs would go crazy with excitement. When the clicking stopped, the horses and the dog would calm down.

Special Note: My father Paul Marceau Roberts moved to California after serving time with the US Army as a Korean War Veteran (Signal Battalion as a lineman). After the war, he worked for PG&E as a lineman, later a cash register repairman and finally a State Tax Investigator with EDD (Employment Development Department).
