During my time in the Army, the only place I went to in Switzerland is Lake Constance. How I wanted to visit other areas of Switzerland that resonates with terrestrial beauty, along with ancient history and tales of hauntings. That place would be Appenzell Innerrhoden. Appenzell Innerrhoden was part of the historical canton of Appenzell, which was divided into Appenzell Ausserrhoden (Protestant) and Appenzell Innerrhoden (Catholic). This occurred in 1597, as a result of the Swiss Reformation. Of course, there would be tensions between the people of these two religions. Appenzell Innerrhoden was formed from areas that chose to remain Roman Catholic. There are many sightings of phantom warriors from the Battle of Vögelinsegg.

The Battle was fought on May 15, 1403, as part of the Appenzell Wars, about 600 horsemen and many of the 5000 infantry of the League army were killed by the Appenzell forces. Locals and tourists have heard disembodied screaming and yelling, only to find nothing at where the screaming and yelling was heard. Even though the Appenzell forces had only a few casualties, the residual energy from these two fronts continues on to the present day. Olivia Kaufmann who has visited the site several times, has seen phantom warriors on their horses walking on the land, only to fade away into nothingness. Olivia has heard the sounds of ghostly galloping horses, only to investigate the area where she heard the galloping horses and to find nothing, no horses. History says that the battle was fought between the Appenzell forces, allied with the Canton of Schwyz, and the army of the Abbot of St. Gall and his allies from the Swabian League. The Appenzell victory led to them gaining greater autonomy and associating with the Old Swiss Confederacy.

Gabriel Gerber and his girlfriend Lia Bucher were hiking in the area and felt heavy dizziness and had to sit down. After 10 minutes of sitting down, they were approached by 3 men in flashy colorful costumes. Lia says there were slashes, cuts in the garments that they were wearing. One soldier was holding a flag, while another was beating on a drum. One of the soldiers had feathers in his hat. The 3 men stood out, because of the bright colors to their uniforms. As the three men walked past Gabriel and Lia, they seemed to fade out of view and in the distance, they could see what appeared to be a battle. The battle scene lasted only for a minute and it to faded away. The battle on this land has left a strong imprint into the atmosphere that will replay itself over and over again.

The locals in the area describe supernatural events such as unexplained sounds, movements, or visual apparitions. These are often attributed to “unfortunate souls” of deceased individuals that may have participated in the Battle of Vogelinsegg. There are also stories of there being a “dark side” to Appenzell. The land sometimes brings palpable loneliness and melancholia that lingers heavy over the landscape during certain times in the day and into the night. Christen Matteo while fishing was overwhelmed with sadness and depression. Something kept telling him to jump into the water. He never had this feeling before, the sadness was too much for Christen. Christen packed up his fishing gear and walked away from the site as fast as he could. The further away he got from the lake’s edge, the better he felt. Christen has vowed never to go fishing in that area again. Christen feels he could have lost his life if he had walked into the water.

The beauty of Appenzell Innerrhoden is magical, but one has to be careful when treading on this ancient land. I feel that Appenzell Innerrhoden has many dark secrets.
