Schönlaterngasse:
This street is home to the “Basilisk House” (Basiliskhaus), named after the mythical serpent-like creature said to have terrorized the area. The legend involves a well where the basilisk was supposedly killed, and the house was built to commemorate the event. J.K. Rowling was aware of this legend and the Basiliskhaus Serpent became part of the Harry Potter Universe. The Basilisk in the Harry Potter Universe is a giant, venomous serpent that plays a significant role in the Harry Potter series, specifically in the second book/movie, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. It is a creature of immense power, capable of killing with its gaze or venomous bite. Did this creature ever exist? The people of Schonlaterngasse Street believe in the legend. A local named Bettina Scmidt believes that the serpent once had an owner in Vienna and when the serpent became too large, the owner released it on the street. Bettina’s grandmother believed it to be an escaped python. She believed it was either a Reticulated Python or a Green Anaconda. Bettina says that all legends have a foundation of truth. I met Bettina on a cruise line at Lake Constance, and she related this story to me.

Vienna Woods (Wienerwald):
The extensive forests surrounding Vienna are a source of many local legends. These include stories of werewolves, ghostly figures, and other supernatural beings said to roam the woods at night. The White Lady, a famous ghost in Vienna is known to appear all over Vienna, especially is seen in the Vienna Woods. The White Lady is dressed in a flowing white dress, and she looks like she is looking for something. Jakob Mayr, a hiker came across The White Lady crossing his path. When she entered the woods on the other side of the trail, Jakob could no longer see her. Mayerling is located in the Vienna Woods, Mayerling is a site with a tragic history that has attracted visitors and those interested in its past. Here is what happened. At the Mayerling hunting lodge in January 1889, Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria and his lover Baroness Mary Vetsera died in a suspected murder-suicide pact. While the official report claimed Rudolf died of heart failure, the discovery of both their bodies, with Rudolf having a gunshot wound and Mary with a bullet wound to the temple, pointed to a different scenario. The incident remains shrouded in mystery and is often referred to as the “Mayerling Incident”. Some tourists and locals who have visited the site claim that they hear sobbing and what sounds like crying. They believe the sobbing and crying is from the ghost of Baroness Mary Vetsera.

St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Stephansdom):
This iconic cathedral has its share of spooky tales, including stories of a ghostly knight and other spectral figures said to inhabit the area. One prominent element that fuels these stories is the catacombs beneath the cathedral. Built over centuries, these crypts house the remains of thousands of people, including Duke Rudolph IV and Viennese cardinals and archbishops. The sheer volume of human remains, particularly those removed from city cemeteries during the bubonic plague outbreaks, creates a somber and eerie atmosphere. It is understandable that some visitors have reported feeling chills or a sense of unease, leading to stories of “presences of a spirit nature” in the catacombs. Tobias Hofer a former caretaker felt ghostly fingers run down the back of his neck to his spine. Once as he was combing his hair, he felt the ghostly fingers massaging the top of his head. Tobias feels the ghost is harmless, but sometimes Tobias gets spooked from the experience. A local named Birgit Fuchs has seen the ghostly knight standing guard outside of the Cathedral. When Birgit approached the knight, thinking it was an actor, the knight vanished.

Hofburg Palace:
Empress Elisabeth aka Sisi was known for her interest in the supernatural. She still roams the palace halls. Many tourists have seen her apparition at the palace. The ghost of Sisi does not interact with any of the tourists. Another ghost that haunts the palace is a ghost called “The Accused Guard”. The Accused Guard when he was living was accused of raping a local. His ghost is now seen on the palace grounds and inside the castle. Tourists say that his face is full of anger.

St. Rupert’s Church (Ruprechtskirche):
As the oldest church in Vienna, St. Rupert’s has accumulated its share of legends and tales of ghostly encounters over the centuries. The most popular is that locals and tourists have seen ghostly images of people praying. People have also heard disembodied chanting and singing coming out of the church.

Ankeruhr Clock:
This clock tower features figures that move to represent historical figures, and some stories suggest that these figures might have a ghostly presence after dark, otherwise the clock does not have any paranormal activity surrounding the clock. There was one incident that pertained to the clock. In July of 1974, during dusk a werewolf type of creature was seen next to the clock. When a few people started getting excited and pointing towards the werewolf looking creature, the creature ran off, never to be seen again. Referred to as the Ankeruhr Clock Werewolf.
