Eltz Castle (Burg Eltz) is said to be haunted, particularly by the spirit of Countess Agnes, who died defending the castle after rejecting an unwelcome suitor. Her story and the presence of her armor in the Countess Room contribute to the castle’s reputation for being a “thin place” where paranormal activity is experienced. Elsa Hoffman when visiting the castle was approached by the full body apparition of Countess Agnes. The Countess walked up to Elsa and looked her straight in the eye. Elsa said her eyes were filled with sorrow. Elsa felt no fear from the apparition. The Countess gently grabbed Elsa’s hand and held it for a very short while. The Countess gave a brief smile to Elsa and then faded away.
The castle was founded in a region that was an important trade route between rich farmlands and their markets in the Roman period. With the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the late 5th Century AD, the area was conquered by the Franks. At times tourists hear the sounds of battle in the nearby fields. With land captured by Charlemagne’s empire, it went to his son Louis the Pious. It was during this period that the site was occupied by a simple manor hall with an earthen palisade. Several hundred years later, House of Eltz began work on the Platteltz, a Romanesque keep, which was built on the site of the old manor hall. This remains the oldest part of the castle. In this area, tourists feel like they are being watched. Some tourists have said they have been touched or heard whispering voices when no one was around. Adelbrecht Meyer from Crailsheim says he has seen the spirits of Roman soldiers, and he learned that in 1157 the fortress was an important part of the Holy Roman Empire under Frederick Barbarossa. It continued to protect the trade routes from the Moselle Valley and the Eifel region. Adelbrecht mentioned that at times, you can hear the shuffling of feet and sounds of marching coming from the oldest part of the castle.
Between 1331–1336, the castle endured the only serious military conflicts in its history during the Eltz Feud when lords in the region including Johann of Eltz, together with free imperial knights, opposed the territorial policies of Balduin von Trier who was the Elector and Prince-Archbishop of Trier. As a result of the standoff, Balduin lay siege to Johann at Eltz Castle. It was bombarded by primitive cannons known as Pot-de-fer and catapults from a small siege castle, Trutzeltz Castle, which was built on a rocky outcrop on the hillside above the castle (the remains can still be seen today as a few ruined walls on the northern side of the castle). The siege of Eltz ended after two years when the free imperial knights agreed to accept the laws and sovereignty of Trier. Archbishop Balduin reinstated Johann to the Burgrave, but only as his vassal and no longer as a free knight. Clara Weber and her friend Johanna Muller have visited the castle several times. Clara has heard the distant sounds of battle. Johanna on the other hand has witnessed warrior apparitions appearing on the grounds of the castle. Some of the ghostly warriors appear to be in conflict. Johanna says that the apparitions appear quickly and disappear quickly.
A very strange incident occurred when Felix Schmidt, a visitor to the castle saw what looked like a man lying on the castle grounds. The figuration was all black and in the shape of a large man. As Felix approached the figure, he could then see it was a gathering of Carrion Crows. As the crows departed, for a quick second, they were still in the shape of a large man, until they finally scattered and flew off.
Countess Agnes was a strong-willed woman. She was the daughter of the 15th Count of Eltz. Her spirited nature and interest in knightly pursuits was known throughout the castle. There was something about those knights that would catch the Countess’ eye. Then came an unwanted suitor. She was promised in marriage to the Knight of Braunsberg, but she did not find him to her liking and rejected his proposal. In a fit of rage, Braunsberg returned with an army and stormed the castle. Agnes, clad in armor, took to the defense and was killed in battle by Braunsberg, who did not recognize her. Her regretful attacker fled, and the spirit of Agnes is said to remain in the castle, with her room and belongings, including her armor, said to be a focal point for hauntings. Visitors and staff have reported a strange presence being felt in the Countess Room. Then there is another ghost named “Little Peter” who roams the halls, while others cite technical disturbances during shows as a sign of the castle’s ghostly inhabitants. Conrad Adler, a tourist from Mannheim encountered Little Peter. Little Peter appeared in front of Conrad and laughed at him and pointed to his nose. Little Peter then disappeared. Conrad went to the restroom only to discover that he had a pimple at the edge of his nose. Conrad believes that Little Peter was laughing at this inflamed red bump at the tip of his nose. Sophia Schulz, a former employee says that the veil is thin at this castle. It’s not surprising that so many people who visit the castle, will have witnessed the paranormal.
