Former tour guide Adony Farkas says that Holloko Castle in Hungary is one of the most haunted castles in Eastern Europe. The dominating ghost of the castle is the Holloko Castle Witch. There have been many sightings of this witch. The castle is filled with ancient history. Locals and tourists have heard disembodied screams coming from the land around the castle. Locals have seen Mongols on horseback. The Mongols did invade the area known as Holloko village. After the invasion from the Mongols, construction of the castle commenced to protect the area from future attacks. The Kacsics noble clan took control of the castle, according to records that date back to 1310.

The horror of war did not end with the Mongols. In 1552, The Ottomans captured the castle. For the next 150 years control alternated between Ottoman and Hungarian forces. There were skirmishes between the Ottoman empire and Hungarian forces. Dominik Szabo, a local tourist remembers seeing ghostly soldiers from the Ottoman empire march along the horizon from the castle and then melted away in the sunlight. Dominik Szabo a paranormal enthusiast has visited the castle on several occasions, but the day he saw the ghostly soldiers, made him a believer in the afterlife. He was able to determine that they were Ottoman soldiers from their clothing attire. Dominik is also a history major. In 1987, the castle ruins, and surrounding area were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Paloma Adam, a former grounds keeper says that people have seen some very strange ghosts at the castle. Paloma says believe it or not, there is a ghostly giant black bulldog that is seen walking around the castle. Some people feel that if you encounter this bulldog, you will fall into misfortune. People have seen shadow figures zipping along the walls of the castle. People have seen full body apparitions. A woman in an old dress is seen, and the locals believe that this is the Holloko Castle Witch. Balint Kovacs, a tourist was sitting on a chair inside the castle and Balint glanced down at his feet and there was a frog. The frog hopped around for a bit and then disappeared.

The Holloko Castle Witch story originated from the story that the Kacsics noble family kidnapped a beautiful maiden from a neighboring village and imprisoned her within one of its cold stone cells. Unfortunately for the nobleman, the girl’s nanny was a witch, and she made a pact with the devil to free her mistress. The devil commanded his sons to assume the form of ravens each night and steal stones from the castle until the girl was set free. Today the town of Holloko echoes this fairy tale; its Hungarian name translates to “raven stone” and the road leading to the village is marked with a bronze statue of a raven perched on a rock outcropping. The Holloko Castle Witch will always be with this castle says Paloma Adam. Paloma feels that the witch protects the castle. Ravens have been seen descending upon the castle on certain days, just before dark.

Istvan Molnar, a local historian says that another ghost story that is associated with this castle, is the story of the Headless Black Horse. If you have committed any heinous sin, a headless black horse will appear. As soon as you look upon the headless black horse, you will be cursed and fall deathly ill. Many misfortunes will fall upon you, that can be so bad, it could lead to your demise. Reka Barta, a ghost hunter says that many paranormal investigators visit the castle to experience the paranormal. Reka says that the castle will always be mysterious and intriguing.
