The Galapagos Islands are an archipelago located in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. They are part of the country of Ecuador, which is in northwestern South America. The islands are known for their unique wildlife and volcanic origin. But, they are also known for being haunted! In some cases, extremely haunted!
Galapagos Islands have had their share of tragedy. There are also stories of some mysterious events, a possible portal on one of the islands. Let’s take a closer look at some of the paranormal activity that resonates through these islands. Baltra Island is home to a US air base and rumored to be haunted by the “Headless Gringa”, and Floreana Island, site of the unsolved “Galapagos Affair” disappearances and murders from the 1930s. Additionally, the Wall of Tears on Isabela Island is associated with the spirits of prisoners who suffered and died during its construction, and some people report hearing wails and moans there.
BALTRA ISLAND
During World War II, a U.S. air base was located at Baltra Island. A persistent ghost story that has been told verbally over a thousand times is the story of the “Headless Gringa.” The Headless Gringa haunts the air base. The Headless Gringa aka La Gringa sin Cabeza ghost has been seen by many airmen. Liam Donoso says that the entity scared him to death, as she approached him and walked right through him. Baltra Island is probably the most haunted island among the other islands. The legend is centered around the former US Air Force base on the island, established during World War II and still used by the Ecuadorian military. The Legend of the “Headless Gringa” is the story that originates with American serviceman at the base. One of the American serviceman discovered his girlfriend was cheating on him. In a fit of rage, he pushed her off a cliff, and her head was severed. About 3 weeks later, the Headless Gringa started haunting the base. Her ghost is said to target solitary men at the military base, but she has not been known to appear to or attack women. Sailors and airmen report feeling the sensation of someone climbing into bed with them late at night, pressing down on them, and attempting to suffocate them. Some claim to have seen a shadowy, wispy black torso in the dark corners of the old barracks. The ghost is also said to disorient men at night, causing them to lose their way and suddenly find themselves at the airport when walking from the barracks. While the ghost is part of local folklore, the military base is generally off-limits to tourists and the spirit is said to remain confined to the base area, posing no threat to visitors. Baltra is primarily an entry point for tourists visiting other islands in the Galapagos, and most visitors are quickly transferred to ferries to continue their journeys.
FLOREANA ISLAND
The island is steeped in mystery from the “Galapagos Affair,” a series of events in the 1930s involving the disappearance and death of several early settlers, including the “Baroness” Eloise von Wagner. Some people still report feeling an eerie atmosphere on the island. Some visitors have claimed that they witnessed a portal on the island. The “Galapagos Affair” is a series of mysterious events that occurred in 1934. It involved several settlers who disappeared or died under strange circumstances. Baroness Eloisa von Wagner was another person who simply vanished from the island. Her partner was a key part of the island’s mysterious history. You can say her partner was a “person of interest”. Her partner at a later time also disappeared. While the truth of their vanishing act remains unknown, many locals believe her spirit haunts the island. Diego Valdivieso claims he witnessed her spirit standing on the edge of the water. Diego also says that he saw the air twirling around. When this happened, Diego thought it looked like a vortex. The sighting only lasted for a few seconds. During the 1930s, other people also died or vanished without a trace, adding to the intrigue and local folklore. Despite numerous expeditions, conclusive evidence about what happened to the missing settlers has never been found, leaving the island’s past shrouded in mystery and unsettling rumors.
WALL OF TEARS (ISABELA ISLAND)
Wall of Tears (Isabela Island) was built by prisoners during the island’s time as a penal colony from 1944 to 1959, this wall is named for the suffering and deaths of the laborers. Locals and visitors report hearing the wails and moans of those who perished while the wall was being constructed. According to local legends on Isabela Island, the Wall of Tears is haunted by the spirits of the prisoners who built it. The wall was constructed under brutal conditions, and many prisoners died during the process. Locals claim that the area around the wall is filled with a “heavy energy” and that visitors who go near it, especially after dusk, may hear the cries and wailing of the deceased prisoners. Antonio Flores from Ecuador says he actually saw several “prisoner” ghosts working on the wall. While watching, he saw 3 of the prisoner ghosts collapse. When this happened all of the prisoner ghosts vanished into nothingness. Antonio says the Wall of Tears is very haunted. The Wall of Tears was not built for a practical purpose but as a form of punishment and torture. This added to the psychological trauma of the forced labor, as the prisoners knew their efforts were meaningless. The deep suffering associated with the site is the basis for the haunting legends. The wall (known in Spanish as El Muro de las Lágrimas) was built between 1945 and 1959 by prisoners of a penal colony established on Isabela Island. Inmates were forced to quarry heavy volcanic rocks from a distant site and carry them by hand to build the wall. The difficult, pointless labor and harsh conditions led to many prisoner deaths from accidents, heat exhaustion, and disease. The negative residual energy at Isabela Island will last for an eternity according to some locals.
