When I was a little boy, I went with my dad, mom and sister to Lehigh, Oklahoma. My grandmother (Sophie Roberts) lived in a decrepit old 2 story haunted farmhouse. The place was so creepy, that I actually slept walked from the guest bed and into the night. My dad grabbed me and shook me awake. I was outside of the house, headed for the chicken coop. That was a very creepy night, especially since I think I encountered a ghost, but you can read about that below this article. For right now, let’s look at some of the haunted places in Oklahoma City. My sister and I, went with my uncle George Roberts to Oklahoma City and George had a lot of creepy stories about the hauntings at Oklahoma City. Here are those stories.

The Skirvin Hotel:
The Skirvin Hotel in Oklahoma City is known for paranormal activity, with the most famous legend being the ghost of a maid named Effie, who supposedly haunts the 10th floor. According to the story, hotel owner W.B. Skirvin impregnated a maid named Effie, locked her in a 10th-floor room until she gave birth, and she later died by suicide, either with or without the baby. This legend has led to reports of strange noises, sightings of a nude woman, and even phantom babies and their strollers. One baby has a distinct cry and is referred to as the “Crying Baby”. The Crying Baby is usually heard most in the ballroom. Uncle George Roberts says that the ghost of Effie was seen by a visitor, tied up to a bed post on the 10th floor. Effie had a look of terror on her face and appeared to be screaming, but there was no sound of screaming coming out of her mouth. The visitor was shaken to her core and ran out of the hotel, terrified at what she just saw.

Civic Center Music Hall:
A mysterious “Grayman” is said to haunt the halls of this historic building. Visitors and investigators have reported a range of paranormal experiences, including the sounds of locked doors opening, hearing a child’s voice, and seeing unexplainable shadows. The Grayman is at times seen as a full body apparition, wearing a gray suit. The Grayman will appear and then turn into a shadow that slips underneath a door. The door will rattle and shake for a bit, then everything goes back to being normal.

Overholser Mansion:
The ghost of Anna Overholser, the wife of the original owner, is said to wander the mansion. The Overholser Mansion in Oklahoma City is widely believed to be haunted by its original owners, Henry and Anna Overholser, with paranormal activity including sightings of a woman in white, unexplained sounds like footsteps and a voice asking for help. Objects will move on their own. Visitors report experiencing cold spots in the third-floor tower, moving shadows, and the feeling of a presence. Uncle George Roberts claims that as he walked down the hallway, he felt a gentle touch on his earlobe, and this happened twice. George believes it was Anna Overholser.

Saint Joseph’s Old Cathedral:
This location is considered one of the most unhinged in Oklahoma City. Paranormal activity at the Saint Joseph’s Old Cathedral in Oklahoma City is associated with its history as an orphanage, with reported phenomena including strange sounds, the sighting of ghosts, and children claiming to see other children. Some of the reported hauntings are attributed to the tragedies of children who died at the orphanage, including those from the 1934 electrocution of two boys named Carl Spiva and Cecil Hunt, and the possibility of despair from yellow fever victims echoing through the area. Legend has it, that when the wind blows or a storm coming in, you can hear the screaming of children.

Myriad Botanical Gardens:
Underground tunnels here have been associated with ghostly sightings and shadow people. The now defunct Colgate Apparition Seekers said they captured two EVPs. One EVP sounded like a growl, while the other EVP was a Class A EVP that said “move along!” Both EVPs sounded like males.

Rose State College Student Union:
This building is considered creepy, with some reports of paranormal activity. People have claimed that they sometimes hear odd whispering, when there is no one around.

Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building Plaza:
The site of the 1995 bombing is a location of great sadness and loss, and it is considered a place of tragedy and hauntings. When visiting this site, people have felt sadness and depression. People say that the atmosphere has strong negative overtones. Paranormal investigators believe there is dark residual energy that is imprinted into the atmosphere.

Former Oklahoma Methodist Orphanage:
The site has reported activity including strange sounds and sightings of a young girl’s ghost. Psychic Julia Lancaster of New Jersey says she made contact with the little girl ghost. The little girl ghost identified herself to the psychic as Missy. The psychic says that Missy died from a prolonged illness.

Puckett’s Wrecker Service:
An apparition was allegedly caught on surveillance cameras here, floating in a circle. Paranormal claims at Puckett’s Wrecker Service in Oklahoma City center on a supposed “ghost” captured on a surveillance camera in 2002, which appeared to be a floating figure among wrecked cars. The incident gained national attention, but a caller suggested the figure was a hoax created by two friends using fishing poles, wires, and ladders, and the mystery remains unsolved. Uncle George Roberts says that other paranormal investigation groups have investigated the site and found no evidence of any kind of haunting.

Oklahoma City Zoo:
Some reports mention a longhaired woman in the Aquaticus area. A person who has seen the longhaired woman says that her hair is sandy blonde and she appears to be wearing a green dress. She did not seem to be aware of the witness and continued to look down.

Former St. Vincent’s Mental Asylum:
After a history of dark events, this location is reportedly haunted. It closed down after a nurse in 1962 suffocated two patients. There was also a murder. The murder of Reverend Richard Frank Dolan in 1988. The paranormal activity includes strange sounds, apparitions, and activity picked up by paranormal investigators. Tulsa Active Apparition Seekers (TAAS) say that they have captured a lot of EVPs at the site. They have also captured a lot of orb activity in their photo. They believe that the orbs have intelligent movement.

HAUNTED LEHIGH, OKLAHOMA
When I visited Lehigh, Oklahoma with my mom, dad and sister, I was about 12 years old. What I remember about this desolate place is that the land is filled with chiggers. My legs had bites all over them. I remember seeing water snakes in the strippets made by coal miners. Strippets are large holes in the ground created by past coal miners. I remember capturing a land turtle and after playing with this turtle for about 2 hours, I released it back in the grasslands.

My dad was born and raised in Lehigh. His mother Sophie Roberts was known as the Angry French Woman. My cousin Paul Leaird at one time was the mayor of Lehigh, Oklahoma, after his tour in Vietnam with the 1st Cavalry Division. When I visited Lehigh, it was during the weekend of 4th of July and I remember lighting a Black Cat firecracker and it blew up in my hand. I was screaming bloody hell. Believe me it hurt. That very same night after I fell asleep, I went sleepwalking in my grandmother’s house and my father found me walking about in a dead sleep. I believe the pain from the firecracker blowing up in my hand, caused my sleepwalking. The next night, the pain subsided and I was able to watch the fireflies in the night sky. When I went to bed, I heard a woman’s voice say “follow me”. I looked out the window and saw a white misty female form and then it just faded away. My sister said that on that night, she saw a strange woman in a white robe smile at her. Sharon thought it might be her aunt Yvonne Leaird. We asked Yvonne about it and she was nowhere around my grandmother’s house. I believe my sister and I, encountered a ghost.

The next night, everything was back to normal and I hung out with my cousins and we went out capturing fireflies and placing them in a large jar. When I woke up, I went with my dad to go hunting. It was my first time going hunting. I did not have the heart to shoot a rabbit, nor could I shoot a deer. My dad sort of gave up on me, when it came to hunting. I never went hunting again. My dad also stopped hunting. When my dad lost his point man, which was me, what was the point of going hunting?

Anyway, those are the things that I remember about Lehigh. Lehigh is an very old town, been around since 1882. At one time this town was called Boone, but then they changed it to Lehigh, naming it after Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, a coal mining region. At one point of time, Pretty Boy Floyd passed through this town and legend has it, hid at one of the homes in Lehigh. My grandmother lived in a home, that was built by the blood money gained from a notorious sheriff of the town. Story has it, the corrupt sheriff killed a resident and took his valuables and money. With that money he built the house that my grandmother lived in. Lehigh once had a lynching there, conducted by the infamous KKK (Ku Klux Klan). Lehigh may be a small town, but it still has a historic past and some of the past history is tarnished.

At one time Lehigh was a thriving town, because of the coal mines. Lehigh became a ghost town when the trains started using oil instead of coal. Many miners were injured and some lost their lives in the coal mines. Some workers on the train tracks were also injured and some lost their lives. There are people who have visited or lived in Lehigh that say that this town is very haunted. Below are some of the paranormal entities that can be found in Lehigh, Oklahoma.

Owl Grocery Specter:
Around this old building a tall human shaped shadow is seen against the walls and on the ground. A few people have said they have been pushed or shoved by this specter. Megan Hall, a visitor says she was grabbed and then she felt like she was possessed. The possession lasted for about 6 minutes and after the entity left her body, she vomited all over the place.

Strippet Hand Demon:
Legend has it, that back in the 1920s, 2 brothers were chopping wood. One brother told the other brother that if he places his hand on a block of wood, he will chop it off. The brother did exactly that and the brother chopped off his hand. After he chopped off his brother’s hand, he felt so bad about doing it, he threw the hand into a strippet. By throwing the hand into a strippet, the brother thought he was hiding the evidence. Later his brother died. In the strippet, people have claimed that they see a hand floating around in the water. The hand has all kinds of blisters on it and one resident who does not want to be identified says that the hand once choked him. Many people believe that hand is demonically possessed.

Coal Miner in Black:
Residents have seen what appears to be a coal miner wandering around the thickets, he is dressed all in black. When one resident approached the miner, the miner said “why? “why?” Theory is that this is the ghost of a coal miner that lost his life in the mines.

Screaming Blue Lady:
On one of the railroad tracks, late at night, people will see a woman dressed in blue and screaming at the top of her lungs. It is believed that she may have committed suicide at the railroad tracks. No one seems to know her story. Derin Danville from Texas says that his mother, a resident of Colgate, Oklahoma believes that the Screaming Blue Lady when she was alive found out that her husband was cheating on her, with her best friend and that she ran onto the railroad tracks into an oncoming train and died.

Flying Bobcat:
Hunters have seen what appears to be a Bobcat that can leap from the tree and fly a considerable distance. The Flying Bobcat has been seen 3 times by hunters.

Lehigh Thunderbird:
In 1897, a coal miner named Curly Bob made claim that he saw a large bird with a 30-foot wingspan fly over Lehigh. Could this be some type of Thunderbird?
