Stellenbosch, South Africa, is considered haunted by locals and visitors, with numerous ghost stories stemming from its 17th-century colonial history, historic vineyards, and old university architecture. Reports include eerie occurrences in historic mansions and mysterious activity on old farms, frequently linked to the area’s turbulent past. There are reports of Shadow People that are seen throughout Stellenbosch. Local Oratile Khumalo says that some tourists and locals have seen ghostly African wild dogs roaming around the hillsides.

Historic Vineyards and Mansions:
The Tokoloshe

Several visitors and guests have reported strange occurrences, such as finding doors unlocked that were previously locked. This has occurred in old historical Cape Dutch mansions found throughout the region. An apparition that has been seen is “the Blonde Lady”. A local named Tyler Donpoint encountered the Blonde Lady and according to Tyler, you can only see her shoulders, head and long blonde hair. The “Tokoloshe” is possibly a cryptid that people have seen. While sightings are not exclusive for Stellenbosch, the cryptid is sometimes seen in other parts of South Africa. The Tokoloshe is described as a small, hairy, malevolent creature. A local named Leigh Botha says that he was chased by the Tokoloshe. When he reached his home, he had unexplained scratches on his torso.

University Folklore:
Similar to the, Lord Milner Hotel in nearby Matjiesfontein which is famous for its “ghostly card-shuffling nurse”, many old buildings in the Stellenbosch region are rumored to have active spirits, often linked to the early Cape colonial period. While not as heavily documented in mainstream tourism as places like the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, the charm of Stellenbosch is often blended with tales of ghosts and folklore, making it a popular subject for local ghost stories. Stellenbosch is home to several locations with reported hauntings, rooted in its centuries-old history as one of South Africa’s earliest colonial settlements. While many locals view these stories as urban legends, specific sites are frequently cited by paranormal enthusiasts and historians. South African paranormal investigators say that there are a lot of residual energy, and the people that have been interviewed sometimes see past events unfold and then disappear.

Franschhoek, South Africa
Located in the Franschhoek Valley (Stellenbosch municipality), this historic estate is famous for a “haunted farmhouse” where visitors and staff have reported mischievous spirits. Things get moved around. disembodied giggling is sometimes heard. People mention that spirits are known to open and close doors. Flicking light switches occur in the original homestead’s tasting room. A fun place for tourists, the farm offers guided historical walks that delve into the spooky history of the winelands.

Wilgenhof Men’s Residence
Stellenbosch, South Africa

Recently, this 120-year-old men’s residence gained notoriety as a “house of horrors” due to the discovery of secret rooms and disturbing initiation rituals. While more of a “metaphorical haunting” involving a toxic institutional culture, the discovery of two secret rooms used for decades has led to many labeling the building as having an eerie, dark past. Psychic Palesa Baloyi envisioned people being tied up and whipped. There are no historical records that mention people being tied up and whipped. Further research is needed. Jacob Walker visited the Wilgenhof Men’s Residence and felt a ghostly kick to his leg. Jacob was in pain and when he left and got on the road, the pain faded away.
