Visalia, California, has several reputed haunted locations, largely centered around historic spots in Tulare County. Common reports include a ghost soldier at the Visalia Public Cemetery, eerie activity at the downtown Fox Theatre, and paranormal sightings at Mooney’s Grove Park and the Rocky Hills caves. I once lived in Visalia as a little boy and heard many stories. When I got older, I had the opportunity to visit some of the haunted areas of Visalia. My group HPI (Halo Paranormal Investigations) conducted 5 investigations in Visalia and one of the investigations was a private home. A private home that was haunted by a demonic force. The only thing we captured was some orb photos and orbs can be almost anything. Orb photos are not considered as evidence. I conducted a Roman Catholic house blessing. I did a follow-up with the clients 2 weeks later and they said my cleansing worked. The demonic entity was gone. Below are some of the haunted places in Visalia. Some of the locations, we visited and conducted an impromptu investigation.

Visalia Public Cemetery:
Reports of a Union soldier in blue, as well as the sound of a baby crying at night. Velma Reynolds, Paranormal Investigator claims she was touched at the cemetery. She felt a hand rubbing her arm and legs. Three EVPs were captured, that sounded like growling. I consider the EVPs as inconclusive, no words were identifiable. We interviewed a local named Harold “Harry” Richardson who claims that he saw the full body apparition of the Union soldier. Harry claims it appeared, looked at him and then vanished. Local historians share legends of a Union soldier in blue who supposedly appears before vanishing. He is theorized to be a murder victim from the nearby Civil War-era Camp Babbitt.

Fox Theatre:
Visitors and staff have reported seeing a figure in the wings and feeling an eerie presence. The Visalia Fox Theatre is widely considered to be haunted and has been the subject of several paranormal investigations. The theater itself embraces this history by hosting Ghost Tours in October to explore reported sightings and unexplained occurrences. The most famous story involves a woman, possibly a former dancer, who is frequently seen sitting in the upper balcony. Ghost hunters call her the Balcony Dancer. Investigators from the Tulare County Paranormal Society reported seeing a “shadow figure” near the main entrance and witnessing activity in the upper balcony. During a 2016 investigation by a ghost hunting group, members heard unexplained movement in the balcony near the projection room and captured “whispered conversations” on electronic voice recorders (EVP). Sudden drops of temperature have occurred in the wings of the stage after hours.

Mooney’s Grove Park:
Often cited in local lore for strange activity near the trails. The Orange Lady has been seen gliding or floating through the park. Ghost hunters call her the Orange Lady because she appears to be wearing an orange cape. Capes have been worn for centuries as protection against the elements. By the 18th century, bright red “scarlet capes” were popular among well-bred women as a sign of high status. HPI did an investigation at the park and one of my investigators, a psychic medium claims that she saw the Orange Lady and claims that her outfit and cape is red in some areas, while the rest of the clothing looks orange. At night, the park is rumored to have “spooky vibes,” with some locals claiming it was once a meeting place for occult groups. One of the occult groups that met at the park was the House of Decarabia. Decarabia (also called Carabia) is a demon and, according to The Lesser Key of Solomon, a Great Marquis of Hell, or a King and Earl according to the original Latin version of the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (these were somehow left out of the English translation by Reginald Scot). He has thirty legions of demons under his command. Decarabia knows the virtues of all herbs and precious stones and can change into all birds and sing and fly like them before the conjurer. He is depicted as appearing as a pentagram star, changing into a man under the conjurer’s request. According to Fresno resident Daniel Malen, he witnessed the occult group in the park calling on Decarabia’s name, this was in 2011.

Santa Fe Tracks:
Known for reported paranormal activity on the east side of town. People have heard strange whistling sounds. Some people even claim that they can hear a man singing and whistling to the tune of Oh! Suzanna or The Last Rose of Summer. A paranormal investigator from Colusa County says that when he was at the tracks, he observed odd looking purple orbs flying around and could see the orbs with his eyes.

Rocky Hills:
Local lore suggests that caves on Rocky Hill are haunted by Native American spirits. Rumors persist among locals about occult gatherings or “coven” activities taking place near these caves, though these are often dismissed as unsubstantiated.
Some visitors have reported seeing a “ghost-like” figure near a pair of balancing rocks in the area. This ghost is known as the Balancing Rock Ghost. Several people have seen this ghost. There are informal reports of “unnatural” or “creature-like” sightings on the dark, winding roads surrounding the hill. A paranormal investigator who encountered this creature says it has a spider look, with 4 long legs. The creature (Long Legs) walks close to the ground and walks on all 4 legs like a spider. Franklin Willows of Placer County says he thinks he encountered the creature. He didn’t see the creature, but heard an odd hissing sound. Rocky Hill is a significant Yokuts archaeological preserve containing ancient rock art and bedrock mortars. It has been a sacred site for the Southern Valley Yokuts for over 2,000 years. Much of the hill is protected land; for example, visiting certain archaeological areas officially requires permission from the Tulare County Archaeological Society. Some locals theorize that the spider creature known as Long Legs was summoned by ancient Native Americans to protect and watch over Rocky Hills.

Zalud House Museum (Porterville):
Nearby, this location is known for a chair with a bullet hole and associated stories. Some people have seen a cloudy mist floating around the museum. The sordid history of the museum is that in 1917, orange grower William Brookes (John Zalud’s son-in-law) was murdered in this chair while sitting in the lobby of the former Pioneer Hotel. He was shot four times and killed by a married woman named Julia Howe, who objected to what he was saying about her after bragging he had an affair with her.

The Depot Restaurant
This historic restaurant is one of Visalia’s most famous “haunted” spots. Former employees and guests have reported hearing a woman’s laughter in the main dining room, feeling a malevolent presence in the banquet room (the “Baggage Room”), and experiencing flickering lights that electricians could not explain.

Downtown Alleyways
Local paranormal investigators claim the area between Highway 198 and Murray/Goshen is a “hotbed” for activity. Reported experiences include disembodied voices, the sound of high heels walking, and even objects being thrown. The activity is attributed to the city’s history, which dates back to 1852 and included a bordello, jail, courthouse, and Fort Visalia.

Performing Arts Theater
Many local performers and stage crew members consider this theater to be haunted, with various stories of unexplained sightings and sounds passed down through “theater kids” over the years. Visalia has several reportedly haunted theaters, most notably the Ice House Theatre (home to the Visalia Players), which is rumored to be haunted by a ghost named “Timmy” and has a history as a potential Civil War-era morgue. Additionally, the historic Fox Theatre is reputed to have spirits, and the Rialto Theatre is said to be haunted by a 1940s pianist.
