Koh Phi Phi Don is widely considered haunted by locals following the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, with numerous reports of ghostly encounters, strange noises, and phantom voices on the beaches. These sightings are deeply rooted in local beliefs that the souls of deceased tourists, whose bodies were never found or properly blessed, remain trapped and wandering the island. During my vacation to Bangkok and Pattaya, I heard about the terrifying hauntings at Koh Phi Phi Don. Some of the people I talked with said that when they walked around the area of Koh Phi Phi Don, they would hear choking or gurgling sounds. Sounds of people drowning. A local that I interviewed named Kamon Chaidee says he came upon a man lying on the beach coughing up water. Kamon went over to help and then the man just disappeared. Kamon was shocked, he just realized he saw a ghost. There is one ghost story after another at Koh Phi Phi Don, Thailand.
ACCORDING TO WIKIPEDIA:
Let’s take a look at the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. On 26 December 2004, at 07:58:53 local time (UTC+7), a Mw 9.2–9.3 earthquake struck with its epicenter off the west coast of Aceh, in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The undersea megathrust earthquake, known in the scientific community as the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake, was caused by a rupture along the fault boundary between the Burma plate and the Indian plate, and reached a maximum Mercalli intensity of IX in some areas. The earthquake caused a massive tsunami with waves up to 30 m (100 ft) high, referred to by British and Commonwealth media as the Boxing Day Tsunami, after the Boxing Day holiday, or the Asian Tsunami, which devastated communities along the surrounding coasts of the Indian Ocean, killing an estimated 227,898 people in 14 countries, especially in Aceh in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Tamil Nadu in India, and Khao Lak in Thailand. The direct result was severe disruption to living conditions and commerce in coastal provinces of these and other surrounding countries. It is the deadliest tsunami in history, the deadliest natural disaster of the 21st century, and one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. It is also the worst natural disaster in the history of Indonesia, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
Now let’s take a look at the paranormal activity in this one location called Koh Phi Phi Don.
Tsunami Spirits:
Following the 2004 disaster, many residents and workers reported hearing calls and seeing figures of foreigners, believed to be lost spirits, particularly on the beaches. The Thai culture has strong local beliefs in ghosts, and the concept of Phi Tai Hong (sudden violent death) contribute to the perception of lingering spirits. If a person dies a quick violent death, they will return as a ghost to haunt the land. Some parapsychologists believe that some of these spirits do not realize that they are dead and will wander around aimlessly. A local named Panupong Khamphir aka Panu says that he kept hearing in his ears, a man’s voice saying…”what happened?” Panu says he believes the ghost did not know he had died because of the tsunami disaster. Following the mass casualties, residents and visitors held merit-making ceremonies, and some believe the island is still influenced by the traumatic event, requiring spiritual care to help the souls move on. There are mentions of an abandoned hotel on the island that explorers often describe as having an eerie atmosphere. Some Thailand ghosthunters claim at this abandoned hotel that they have been touched and one investigator claims she was bitten on the arm by a spirit. The ghost hunting group conducted a cleansing ritual at the abandoned hotel after their investigator was bitten. The vast majority of Thais believe in ghosts, so local shrines and rituals to appease spirits are common throughout the island. Panu says that many people have seen an apparition of a man with yellow swim trunks, in fact they call him “Yellow Trunks”. Yellow Trunks acts like he is looking for something or someone. Maybe a loved one?
Phi Phi Island Cabana Hotel:
Guests have reported feeling “haunted” sensations in certain hotels. Those sensations are mostly felt at the Phi Phi Island Cabana Hotel. More on Phi Tai Hong in Thai folklore. According to some paranormal investigators, people who die sudden violent deaths are believed to become Phi Tai Hong. Phi Tai Hong are dangerous and vengeful spirits that haunt the location of their death because they were unable to fulfill their life’s purpose. Some travelers have reported “spooky vibes,” strange noises, or feeling like they were being watched in older accommodations like the Phi Phi Island Cabana Hotel. The Phi Phi Island Cabana Hotel is frequently described by visitors as having a “haunted” atmosphere, though reports vary between subjective impressions of its condition and specific paranormal claims. Much of its eerie reputation stems from its location on an island devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and the hotel’s aging, dimly lit facilities. Some guests and locals have reported specific supernatural occurrences, they hear knockings on their door, pacing footsteps going back and forth, shadow images on the ceiling, strange laughter, disembodied crying and sobbing. General local belief suggests the island is haunted by the spirits of those lost in the tsunami, as many victims did not receive traditional cremation or blessings. There is a legend that goes with Room 9. Some accounts mention a “History of the Building” book at the hotel that allegedly details hauntings in Room 9, including staff seeing a woman walk through the door of the vacant room. Other strange phenomena that guests have reported are hearing constant knocking on walls that followed their movements and claims of a floor that was sealed for years due to a rumored past tragedy. There have been mentions of photos showing “ghostly figures” near room doorways and sightings of “foreigner ghosts” playing in the water near the island’s beaches
Voices from Beyond:
Shortly after the 2004 disaster, reports surfaced of residents hearing voices, particularly from tourists, calling out, saying things like “Come on, come on, come and join our party”. In the aftermath, rescue workers and remaining residents reported hearing foreigners calling out from the beaches at night or seeing spirits of victims looking for their bodies. Many Thai residents and workers reported seeing ghosts of “farang” (foreigners) wandering the beaches, attributed to the lack of traditional religious cremation/blessing for the many victims. Some travelers on social media have reported strong paranormal activity at a ghost ship that is abandoned in the jungle. Locals mention on Tik Tok that they have seen apparitions on the ship and have seen strange items floating in the air. One local says that during dusk you can see a multitude of orbs floating around the boat.
