Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England, is considered haunted and boasts a reputation for paranormal activity, including the “Grey Lady” and a 12th-century “vampire” legend. It is frequently listed among the top haunted castles in the UK due to these tales. The Vampire of Alnwick Castle is about a 12th-century chronicler reporting that a deceased, hunchbacked master of the castle would rise from his tomb at night to roam the town and terrorize villagers, bringing pestilence. Then we have the Grey Lady. The Grey Lady is a popular ghost story involving the spirit of a young maid who reportedly fell to her death down a service chute and is said to haunt the castle’s corridors. According to reports, the castle has high levels of spooky activity, with many people documenting when they see full body apparitions roaming the hallways or sitting on a bed. Let’s take a closer look at the Alnwick Castle Vampire and The Grey Lady. While we are at it, we might as well look into Obby the Obnoxious Ghost.
THE ALNWICK CASTLE VAMPIRE
The 12th-century Alnwick Castle vampire legend, recorded by chronicler William of Newburgh, tells of a jealous man who died from a fall while spying on his wife. This vampire rose from his grave to plague the town with disease, putrid smells, and attacks. Villagers later unearthed his bloated corpse and burned it. After the villagers burned the corpse, the curse supposedly ended. The vampire when a living mortal was considered a “master” or a servant of the castle. This jealous man was obsessed with his wife and suspected her of cheating with any male she came in contact with. While spying on his wife, he wasn’t paying attention to his chores while working on the roof. The jealous man had a catastrophic fall from the roof and broke several bones. The fall brought the man to his demise. Soon after his burial, a terrifying sickness, described as a “stench of death” or plague, struck the village. The villagers believed that the jealous man placed a curse on the village. The deceased was blamed for rising from his grave, spreading sickness, and causing terror. Villagers, accompanied by the man’s brother, reportedly dug up the body and found it “gorged and swollen with a frightful corpulence,” with fresh blood poured from it, according to 12th-century writer William of Newburgh. The Villagers took the corpse outside the town walls, burned the corpse in a field. The Villagers celebrated when the plague stopped. The Villagers were successful in ending the curse. This tale is considered one of the earliest recorded vampire accounts in England and is frequently featured during the castle’s events.
THE GREY LADY
Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England, is reportedly haunted by a “Grey Lady” ghost, believed to be the spirit of a former servant or maid who tragically died after falling down a service chute. She is often described as appearing as a faint gray figure, wandering the ancient halls and corridors of the castle. It is believed that the Grey Lady is a servant named Emma, she is thought to be trapped in the castle, re-enacting her tragic demise. Like many “Grey Lady” tales in British folklore, this apparition is often linked to lost souls or tragic, unexpected deaths within the household, appearing in various locations within the sprawling castle grounds. While Alnwick is famous for many legends, including a 12th-century vampire tale, the Grey Lady is considered a standard apparition of the castle’s dark folklore.
OBBY THE OBNOXIOUS GHOST
Karen Caruso Walker while on vacation in England, stopped by Alnwick Castle. While she was exploring the interior of the castle, she kept hearing a man’s whispering voice saying “tickle”. Karen then felt ghostly fingers tickling her stomach and side. Karen told the entity to stop being so obnoxious. When the tickling started again, Karen yelled: “Obby stop!” Karen thought the name of this ghost should be Obby, since he was so obnoxious. Karen says while exploring the castle, her hair was pulled 2 times. Karen felt a small slap to the back of the head and there was one moment when she felt hands around one of her ankles. Karen had to cut her visit short, because Obby was relentless in his harassment.
