Silver City, New Mexico, is widely considered to be highly haunted, with a rich history of Wild West shootouts, mining tragedies, and spectral encounters. The entire area is steeped in paranormal lore, with local downtown buildings and nearby historic hotels frequently serving as backdrops for spooky tales. When I was a little boy, I went with my parents and sister to see Billy the Kid’s grave and to explore Silver City. When I saw Billy the Kid’s grave, I became drawn to the history of Billy the Kid. I recently watched MGM+ Billy the Kid series, and I must say that MGM+ did a fantastic job in showcasing Billy the Kid’s traumatic life. There have been a few people that claim they have seen Billy the Kid’s restless spirit. Possible sightings of Billy’s apparition have been seen at Silver City, Lincoln and Fort Sumner. Billy the Kid had a mysterious life, and I sometimes wonder if Billy the Kid actually lost his life to Pat Garrett? Did Billy the Kid survive his encounter with Pat Garrett and live out his life as Brushy Bill Roberts? If he did, then why are people saying that they are seeing the ghostly apparition of Billy the Kid? Perhaps it’s time to see what DNA magic can be done, to determine if Billy the Kid is actually in that grave at Fort Sumner. Below are some of the paranormal hotspots of Silver City.

The Palace Hotel:
It is known for a tragic murder on the second floor. The Historic Palace Hotel in Silver City, New Mexico, is widely considered to be haunted and is frequently cited as one of the state’s real haunted places. Dating back to the 1880s, the former hotel and saloon had numerous reports of paranormal activity. Witnesses have reported seeing a bloodstain in one of the second-floor bathroom areas that appears and then vanishes. Linda Danvers visited this hotel and witnessed the blood stain. Linda says she was grossed out and walked out of the room to make a complaint. When she returned, the blood stain had disappeared. Linda thought she imagined the blood stain, only to learn that she is not the only one that has witnessed the “Vanishing Bloodstain”. A famous apparition is The Lady in Old-Fashioned Dress. This apparition has been seen by several people. It’s a female apparition in period clothing has been spotted on the main staircase. Then you have the Prankster Ghosts. Guests have reported experiences such as knocking on doors with no one there. The activity rooms are Rooms 66 & 75. According to local paranormal videos, specific rooms are noted for activity, including Room 66 (mistress/murder) and Room 75 (child death). Guests have reported objects being moved around, indentations on the bed, as if someone is sitting on the bed. Knockings on the wall, doorknobs being shaken and turned by an invisible force. Whispering heard. Strange laughter heard. The hotel is located at 106 W Broadway St and is noted for its “funky” historical, 1800s-style atmosphere. While it is a popular spot for those interested in the paranormal, it remains a functioning restored hotel.

The Murray Hotel:
Located on West Broadway, this Art Deco landmark features stories of unexplained phantom footsteps in the ballroom, mysterious voices in the stairwells, and phantom door-closing noises reported by guests. The Murray Hotel in Silver City, New Mexico, is frequently described as a historic haunted hotel by visitors and guests. Reports and lore surrounding the 1938 Art Deco hotel include:
1. Unexplained Noises:
Staff and guests have reported hearing voices in the stairwell and footsteps or noises in the ballroom. One staff person heard a woman’s soft whisper in his ear saying: “come here.”
2. Apparitions and Experiences:
Stories include guests hearing doors shut when no one is around, a “prankster ghost” shifting items, and feelings of spectral experiences, as guests would call it.
3. History:
The hotel was closed for roughly two decades (the 1990s through 2005) before being restored, a period often associated with tales of the supernatural.
4. Atmosphere:
Some guests have reported “feeling lightheaded, shortness of breath, heaviness and feeling of sadness”. Guests have felt the feeling of dread in some areas of the hotel. My mother Rose Marie Roberts a psychic said she felt depression when going inside this hotel. She felt there were 3 people who have died in this hotel. With those 3, 2 were murdered and 1 committed suicide. After 15 minutes in the hotel, my mother had to leave, the depression overcame her. When she left the hotel, everything went back to normal.

Downtown Properties:
Even local real estate and commercial buildings are rumored to have otherworldly tenants. For instance, downtown office buildings on Yankie Street have had paranormal teams record unexplained high-tech alarms and mysterious audio anomalies after hours. Independent ghost hunter Matthew Longview claims he saw the full body apparition of what looked like Billy the Kid’s buddy Jesse Evan. Jesse Evan, a friend of Billy the Kid was an outlaw, gunfighter and was the leader of a gang of rustlers known as The Boys or The Evans Gang.
