Carmel-by-the-Sea has a reputation for being haunted. The coastal California town is rich in history and folklore, with several of its historic sites, hotels, and coastal canyons tied to spectral legends and paranormal activity.
THE FOUR MOST HAUNTED PLACES IN CARMEL
The Carmel Mission:
Father Junípero Serra, the mission’s founder, who is buried on the grounds, is the most frequently reported apparition. Witnesses claim to see his ghost pacing the halls with a lit candle, only to disappear when approached. He has also been sighted inside the chapel, most notably on New Year’s Eve. Built adjacent to an ancient indigenous burial ground, the mission is reportedly haunted by the Native Americans who suffered and perished there. Visitors have reported a heavy, uneasy feeling on the property, mysterious shadows, and sightings of a young Native American boy. Paranormal investigators have documented instances of candles in the mission’s old rooms lighting themselves and floating through the air. In the dead of night, witnesses have heard disembodied voices chanting, footsteps echoing in empty corridors, and the sound of a phantom dog barking or whining. The Carmel Mission is one of the most famous haunted locations on the Central Coast. It was built in 1771 and sits atop unmarked Native American graves. Tourists have made claim that they have seen phantom robed figures, and even a headless rider on a white horse at dusk. When I lived in Monterey, my parents took me to the Carmel Mission 4 times. During our visits, the only family member that felt anything was my mother. My mother would claim she was a psychic medium. When we walked around the Carmel Mission, my mother would point to different spots at the mission where she felt there was a ghost present.
La Playa Carmel:
This historic boutique hotel (known as the “Grande Dame of Carmel”) is rumored to be haunted by a woman. Legend suggests it is Angela Ghirardelli (from the Ghirardelli chocolate family), who built the estate with her husband, or her cousin who drowned in Carmel Bay. Luke Mazero, tourist says he saw Angela’s ghostly cousin bopping up and down in the ocean, as if she was drowning. As Luke was preparing to call 911 for help, he saw the ghost rise up into the air and vanish. Luke then knew that he was witnessing a ghost and not a human. Other activity is that guests report unexplained footsteps and the sound of splashing water when no one is around. Guests and staff report seeing this female figure strolling through the gardens or appearing on the terrace. Other activity at La Playa Carmel are unexplained scents and inexplicable sounds that are heard. Flickering lights and abrupt drops in room temperature. Doors that randomly open and close on their own.
Robinson Jeffers Tor House:
Built over a century ago by poet Robinson Jeffers, the historic stone home and its “Hawk Tower” are frequent subjects of local ghost stories. Jeffers famously predicted in a poem that he would haunt the house after he died. The location was even investigated by the Ghost Adventures television crew, who documented unusual readings and activity. the historic Tor House and Hawk Tower are rumored to be haunted. The alleged paranormal activity is largely tied to the eccentric poet Robinson Jeffers, who built the structures himself in 1919. The primary source of the haunting lore stems from Jeffers himself. He wrote a poem explicitly titled “Ghost,” in which he predicted that he would talk to the living decades after his death, remaining forever tied to the stone sanctuary he crafted. Over the years, caretakers, visitors, and paranormal investigators have reported several unsettling experiences. Ghost hunters have reported seeing misty, shadowy figures lurking near Hawk Tower and within the grounds. Visitors have noted sudden cold spots, especially when nearing or entering the stone tower. Strange, disembodied sounds have been heard echoing around the property at night when the house is empty.
Mal Paso Creek:
Mal Paso Creek (located in the Carmel Highlands along the Big Sur coast) is associated with local ghost lore, most notably involving the spirits of a phantom wagon driver and his horses. According to local folklore, a fatal accident occurred on the rugged, cliffside trails above the creek when a wagon and its team of horses plunged over the edge. Local ghost stories—documented by regional historians like Randy Reinstedt—claim that if you travel along the trail near the creek late at night, you can still faintly hear the chilling sound of horse bells jingling in the dark. Some tourists, ghost hunters claim that they have seen shadow figures darting here and there. Lawrence Johnson from Seaside, CA says he was followed by glowing red eyes. The apparition with the red glowing eyes went through his body causing sharp pains in his stomach area. The pain lasted for a couple of minutes. When Lawrence recovered, he hightailed it to his car. Lawrence says it was the most scariest thing he ever witnessed.
