HAUNTED TRINIDAD
Trinidad is considered highly haunted by locals, deeply rooted in the island’s folklore of malevolent spirits known as “Jumbies” or “Duppies”. The island is home to infamous ghost stories and allegedly haunted sites, the most famous being Chacachacare Island. The island’s lore and reputation stem from several specific locations and legends, let’s take a look at some of these locations and legends.

Chacachacare Island:
This abandoned leper colony and former nunnery is the Caribbean’s most infamous haunted spot. Locals and visitors frequently recount legends of a ghost nun wandering the abandoned ruins with a lantern, crying after supposedly committing suicide over a forbidden love. Many locals and some tourists have heard wheezing sounds and some disembodied coughing. A tourist named Lonnie San Marcos claims he heard a man yelling “I can’t see!” Some locals claim they have seen apparitions of leper patients walking around the island.

Lopinot Complex:
Known as a historically active spot for paranormal activity, visitors and investigators have reported hearing disembodied voices and footsteps echoing through this historic estate. My ex-brother-in-law Michael McDaniels stopped by this complex and claims he felt a feeling of dread. Michael also claims he heard weeping. Michael lived in St. Thomas for 5 years and worked on an archaeology maritime assignment at Trinidad and Tobago. According to Michael, Trinidad is very haunted, there seems to be a ghost story around every corner and with Tobago, not so much. Michael says that the Lopinot Complex is a restored colonial estate in Trinidad and Tobago originally established in 1806 as La Reconnaissance, a cocoa plantation. Founded by the French Count Charles de Lopinot, the property was worked by enslaved Africans and later used to harbor and discipline enslaved workers. Michael says he heard the sounds of a bullwhip and a man screaming on his last day on the island. The quick scream gave Michael goosebumps.

The Solomon Hochoy Highway:
Local urban legends warn of an apparition of a woman in white on the highway, supposedly trying to hitchhike or warning drivers before vanishing. Joseph Maharaj who once lived in Trinidad claims that he slowed down for the Highway Woman in White and she looked like she was panicking. Then before Joseph knew it, she materialized through his back car door and was sitting in his back seat. She was pointing her finger at something and her mouth was open, and then she vanished. Joseph will never forget his drive down this highway, it was the most scariest thing that ever happened to him.

“Jumbie” Folklore:
Beyond physical locations, Trinidadian culture heavily features Jumbies. These are spirits of the deceased who did not rest in peace and are believed to actively interfere with the living, haunting specific trees (like the Silk Cotton tree), crossroad junctions, and homes. Jonathan Baptiste who was visiting family in Trinidad encountered a Silk Cotton Tree that had living branch limbs. The branch leaves extended out, as if they were trying to snatch Jonathan up. Jonathan ran out of the area as fast as he could. Jonathan feels if he got close to the tree, he would have wind up as a missing person.

HAUNTED TOBAGO
Tobago and the broader twin-island nation are rich with ghost stories and folklore, primarily rooted in the nation’s history of slavery, colonial plantations, and rich Afro-Caribbean mythology. While specific ghost sightings are subjective, supernatural lore—known locally as “jumbie” stories—is very much a part of Tobagonian culture.

Soucouyants:
A prominent myth involves the Soucouyant, a folkloric figure who sheds her skin by night and transforms into a ball of fire to suck the blood of unsuspecting victims while they sleep. Lance DeVertevil, who went to Tobago to visit his cousins claims his great grandmother was visited by a Soucouyant. A ball of fire similar to ball lightning went through her window and flew around her bedroom. Lance’s great grandmother screamed and her husband pulled out his rifle and shot a hole in his ceiling. When he did that, the ball lightning disappeared. The family when hearing this story, believe it was a Soucouyant. Special Note: Some locals of Tobago say that some people of the island practice Voodoo and there have been times zombies have walked around the island. Frances P. claims that he was at an outing and one of the participants, a woman was given a roofie. She was also given other substances and for about 2 weeks, she was in a zombified state of mind, you could tell her to do anything, and she would have done it. Frances P. would not provide her name, in fear of some kind of retaliation.
