India’s New Government MP’s Almost Half Have Criminal Cases Pending Against Them
Candidates for one of 550 MP’s positions in India’s House must declare if they have any criminal charges agains them. 46 percent of the candidates have done so.
31 percent of the charges are for Rape, Murder, Kidnapping. There has been a 55 percent increase in the number of candidates facing criminal charges since 2009. Those with criminal records were 4x more likely to win their election.
The Constitution of India allows for a maximum of 550 members in the House, with 530 members representing the States and 20 representing the Union Territories. At present, the Lok Sabha has 543 seats filled by elected representatives.
It’s very difficult to find someone without criminal background in India we find out. Makes our Congress appear as old pikers…though perhaps if we looked closely. Democracy in India comes with some surprises.
The video below fills in what is happening to Modi and his government. Modi up until now pretty much has had his way.
India’s new parliament, the Lok Sabha, convened on June 24 for its first session after a mammoth general election that lasted seven weeks. PM Narendra Modi, who has been in power since 2014, the election with his Hindu nationalist BJP lost the absolute majority. The BJP remains the strongest force, but Modi is in his third term of office, scheduled to last five years partners.
The best of the swamp.
