Turns out the Federal Government servers were not the source of this masssive data breach which resulted in your Social Security Number ending up on the Dark Web. The breach came from a third-party company which aggregates data to provide background checks.

National Public Data, which aggregates data to provide background checks, has confirmed it suffered a massive data breach involving Social Security numbers and other personal data on millions of Americans.
The Coral Springs, Florida, company posted on its website a notice that “there appears to a have been a data security incident which may have involved some of your personal information. The incident is believed to have involved a third-party bad actor trying to hack into data in late December 2023, with potential leaks of certain data in April 2024 and summer 2024.”

There was an article on 16 August 2024 from CBS News that a Florida company faces multiple lawsuits after the massive data breach. One of the first class action suits was filed on 1 August 2024 by California resident Christopher Hoffman in the US District Court for the Southern District of Florida. It alleges a hackercalled USDD posted on 8 April 2024 database reportedly revealing names, addresses, and even Social Security Numbers that came from a data-scraping company called National Public on a dark web Forum claiming to have the personal data of 2.9 billion individuals and attempted to sell it for $3.5 million us. The Tech site Bleeping Computer states the hacker Fenice then stole the database from hacker USDD and leaked a version on the Dark Web for free access on 6 August 2024.
At least six complaints have been filed against the company National Public Data. National Public Data, a data-scraping company, is operated by patent company Jercho Pictures, Inc., and allegedly the source of the massive data breach.
Christopher Hoffman says in his lawsuit the action is not approved by the individuals who have their data compiled in this manner. Neither Jericho Pictures, nor National Public Data have commented since the massive 2.7 billion personal data breach happened, so it remains uncertain if they will purge or encrypt their existing data in an attempt to stem the fallout.
Americans expect their private and personal data to be kept secure by the different Federal agencies with access to the data. When a third-party company is allowed by the US Government to insecurely store the private and personal data of American citizens and result in this massive data breach, it is a gross violation of public trust and must be investigated and not allowed to happen again.
