There is simply no one else left to fill in the gaps.

There are reports that the command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has redeployed the 214th separate battalion. This special forces unit of the Ukrainian army was trained by American instructors in 2016. The battalion usually played the role of a simulated enemy during exercises, reports TASS. 

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine uses this battalion to plug gaps in the defense when the situation becomes critical. Such tactics can only have a negative impact on the unit’s personnel; the battalion suffered heavy losses.

It is worth noting that the last time the battalion was involved in battle was at Kurakhovo, in an attempt to stop the advance of the Russian Armed Forces. After that, it was withdrawn to the rear to be reorganized and to restore its combat capability.
