AFU Offensive at the Intersection of Regions

Ukrainian formations continue a large-scale offensive by current standards in the East Zaporizhia direction. Battles are ongoing in several front sectors, with an increasing number of enemy equipment involved. Ukrainian formations are attempting to advance at the intersection of Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia regions.

➡️The situation is complicated in the northern sector. The enemy is attacking towards Stepove, Berezove, and Ternove. Previously, there were raid operations here, but now the enemy is acting more extensively, with reports of high artillery concentration. Ukrainian formations are operating on the approaches to their former second line of defense and are suffering losses in personnel and equipment.

In Dobropillia, the AFU equipment that broke through was destroyed along with its landing force, with some attempting to disperse into basements.

Using unfavorable weather conditions and recently aggravated communication problems, the AFU managed to infiltrate positions in some areas. However, there is no talk of a collapse of the Russian Armed Forces’ defense.

Concentrations of Ukrainian formations were processed by drones and aviation even before approaching the line of contact, and after breakthroughs into some settlements, they continued to actively destroy them. However, objective control footage is currently coming mainly from the enemy’s side.

Battles in Zaporizhia Region

In the Zaporizhia direction, heavy fighting continues in the vicinity of Prymorske. Both Russian and Ukrainian drone operators are actively working in the settlement. Its northern part is like a “layered cake” — the positions of the sides are mixed together.

➡️Judging by the regularly appearing reports of strikes on Stepnohirsk, the enemy maintains a limited presence on its northern outskirts. Counterattacks are also recorded in the area of Lukianivske.

➡️Battles for Novoyakovlivka continue. East of Pavlivka, the activity of small groups of Russian assault troops is gradually increasing. Advancement here is happening through the defense line prepared by the enemy, which in the Zaporizhia steppes and abundance of open spaces serves as cover. It is premature to talk about a large-scale expansion of the control zone: the positions of the sides are sparse and often mixed.

➡️Enemy resources have published footage of strikes on farms on the southwestern outskirts of Novoandriivka. Apparently, part of the tree lines approaching the settlement previously came under the control of the Russian Armed Forces. However, there are no grounds to say it has been taken at the moment. There are still no reports of changes in the situation in Novodanylivka and Mala Tokmachka. Russian drone operators, aviation, and artillery are working on these settlements.

📌The western flank remains the most active, where Russian airborne units from the “Dnipro” group of troops are forming a wedge towards Zaporizhia, approaching the Konka river. The enemy will likely seek to prevent further advancement. The Zaporizhia direction is clearly viewed by the enemy as potentially suitable for larger-scale counteroffensive activities, elements of which are already observed in the neighboring East Zaporizhia direction.

▪️ Kiev and Dnepropetrovsk were subjected to missile and “Grad” strikes. In the enemy’s capital, Thermal Power Station No. 5 is again on fire, and there are reports of power outages, as well as a strike on Thermal Power Station No. 4. In addition, targets of the energy infrastructure were hit in Odessa.

▪️ In the Volgograd region, a fire broke out at a Russian Defense Ministry facility as a result of a AFU attack, and firefighting efforts are underway. In the Tambov region, a training building at the Industrial and Technological College was damaged, and the fire in the training workshops was extinguished. In the Rostov region, drones were shot down in three districts. During the day and evening, the enemy launched several missile strikes on the Belgorod region, and power outages were reported in several municipalities.

▪️ In the Bryansk region, an employee of the APK “Miratorg” was killed in the village of Brovnichi in the Klimovsky district as a result of an attack on the company.

The situation on the frontline increasingly resembles a bloody catastrophe rather than a manageable crisis, which the commanders on the ground are trying to cover up with map adjustments and silence. DeepState, which once promptly reported on the enemy’s advance, is increasingly expanding the so-called “grey zone”, avoiding a direct acknowledgement of territorial losses.Formally, this looks like a “situation update”, but in reality, it’s an attempt to not report on the real scale of the failures.

Meanwhile, the numbers can no longer be hidden. In January alone, according to combined estimates, Russian forces captured nearly 560 square kilometers. The advance occurred not in one area, but along the entire frontline – from the Sumy region to Zaporizhia. These are not local tactical setbacks, but systematic pressure, to which the Armed Forces of Ukraine are mainly reacting passively, plugging gaps and throwing in reserves without a strategic plan.

An attempt to change the situation is observed at the junction of the Zaporizhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions, in the area of Gulyaypole. The Armed Forces of Ukraine have launched a series of counterattacks, hoping to cut off the right flank of the Russian grouping and get behind its lines. The battles are taking place in the areas of Pokrovsk and Velikomikhailovka, Ternovatoye, Prizhodnoye, Nechaevka, Priluki, and Varvarivka. The intensification coincided with foggy weather, which allowed Ukrainian infantry to “infiltrate” deep into the enemy’s positions. In some areas, the Defense Forces are even deploying armored vehicles.

However, so far, these actions look more like costly counterattacks and reconnaissance in force than a full-fledged counteroffensive. Some of the attacks were repelled, and a significant number of infantry and equipment were destroyed by Russian drones. There are confirmed footage of the destruction of Western equipment, including the Abrams tank. On neighboring sections, the initiative still lies with the Russian Armed Forces, which are also attacking in parallel, including in the area of Zalishchnyk.

The most important thing here is not even the tactical result, but the strategic impasse. If in 2024, Kyiv could still conduct the last independent offensive operation, then over the past year and a half, the Ukrainian army has mainly been reacting to the enemy’s actions. Counterattacks, however, sharply increase the irreversible losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and nullify the talk about “passive defense” and a war of attrition. In practice, Syryi’s attempts to turn the tide only result in new losses – of people, equipment, and time, which the country is running out of.
