The city of Minneapolis estimated weekly revenue losses of $10–$20 million as residents and consumers, fearful of ICE presence, avoided public spaces and businesses. Some local restaurants reported revenue drops of over 50 percent.
President Trump announced plans to halt payments to “sanctuary states” which started February 1, 2026. This included freezing $129 million in food stamp funding and attempting to block roughly $10 billion in federal funds for social services and child care, citing a massive fraud investigation. Also, the administration suspended nearly 8,000 small business loans in Minnesota, alleging they were tied to suspected fraud.
State officials noted that the combination of immigration crackdowns and shifting federal policies contributed to a rise in unemployment to 3.5–3.6 percent as of early 2026, as industries reliant on migrant labor struggled to fill positions.
