Amazon Executive Chair Jeff Bezos launched a blistering critique against Democratic Socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, blasting his “tax-the-rich” platform and the city’s bloated $43 billion education budget. Bezos scorched the Mamdani administration for pouring a record $43 billion into public schools—spending roughly $44,000 per student—while seeing declining enrollment and subpar results. Bezos argued that doubling taxes on the wealthy would not address municipal inefficiency, stating it wouldn’t help a struggling nurse or teacher in Queens. He instead proposed cutting federal income taxes to zero percent for the bottom half of U.S. earners to provide immediate middle-class relief.
Mayor Mamdani quickly fired back on X (formerly Twitter), responding to Bezos’ claim about the Queens educator by writing, “I know a few teachers in Queens who would beg to differ.” : Tensions escalated further when Mamdani’s administration announced it had aggressively recovered $9 million in unpaid commercial vehicle idling fines from Amazon Logistics. Mamdani directly used the platform to message that “no company—no matter how large or powerful—is above the law.”
The dispute reflects escalating tension over New York City’s cost of living and shifting business climate. While Mamdani is doubling down on taxing high-value second properties to close budget deficits, major financial figures have warned of a Wall Street exodus. Citadel CEO Ken Griffin has already threatened to cancel a planned $6 billion Midtown development project over the hostile political environment.
