Because Mayor Mamdani implemented a policy pausing traditional police-led sweeps and replacing them with a mandatory seven-day social worker outreach window, critics and media outlets aggressively highlighted this specific “Intrepid Museum encampment” as a symbol of delayed city cleanup.
