How Democrats Swept the Midterms—and What Comes Next for Trump - Victor Davis Hanson (Video)

In this 5 November 2026 published video, host Victor Davis Hanson talks about how the Democrats swept the 2026 midterms, delivering Republicans a historic defeat and reshaping the balance of power in Washington. Victor Davis Hanson breaks down what went wrong, from the Iran war and immigration to economic messaging, and what the Democratic wave means for Trump’s final two years and the 2028 election.

The Democratic Party captured control of both houses of Congress in the November 3, 2026 midterm elections, securing substantial majorities in a resounding public rejection of President Donald Trump’s second-term policies. In what observers are calling a historic realignment, Democrats flipped conservative strongholds and upended the legislative landscape for the remaining two years of Trump’s administration.

According to post-election analysis from media outlets like NPR and the BBC, several interlocking factors drove the massive Democratic sweep. Voter exit polling indicated immense dissatisfaction with the ongoing conflict in Iran. Roughly 63 percent of surveyed voters stated that military action against Iran was the wrong decision, and 74 percent cited it as a major factor in their vote. Skyrocketing inflation, rising retail fuel costs, and a widening economic gap between middle-class Americans and the uber-rich heavily penalized incumbent Republicans. The diverse coalition that backed Trump in 2024 collapsed. Highly conservative border districts in Texas and majority-Black counties in Mississippi shifted rapidly toward Democrats, largely fueled by a backlash to aggressive immigration enforcement. Democrats pulled off historic wins in deep-red states like Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The election welcomed pioneering lawmakers, including Abdul El-Sayed of Michigan (the Senate’s first Muslim member) and Peggy Flanagan of Minnesota (the first Native American female senator).

With Representative Hakeem Jeffries poised to take over as House Speaker and Senator Chuck Schumer heralding a reshaped Senate, the final two years of Trump’s term will face steep legislative hurdles.

Investigations & Oversight – Democrats have pledged to leverage their subpoena power to target administrative corruption, corporate price gouging, and officials profiting off the presidency.
Judicial & Cabinet Confirmations – The new Democratic Senate majority will hold the power to block or reject any future conservative federal judges, Supreme Court picks, or Cabinet nominees.
Foreign Policy & Tariffs – Democratic leaders plan to dismantle Trump’s sweeping tariff policies. While Congress can restrict domestic funding, Trump still maintains broad commander-in-chief authorities over the physical execution of the Iran war.
Legislative Gridlock – Jeffries has expressed openness to transactional deals on shared ground—such as housing affordability—but declared that the House will no longer act as a “wholly owned subsidiary of the Trump administration”.

Publicly, Trump has struck a uncharacteristically conciliatory tone, suggesting he can find ways to work with the newly empowered opposition. However, he continues to deflect personal blame for the loss, claiming to reporters that Republicans would have won a landslide had his own name been on the ballot.
