Mamdani Freezes NYC Rents — Thousands Face Losing Their Homes as Housing Crisis Erupts! (Video)

In this 1 November 2026 published video, host Cash Jordan talks about how New York just froze the rent on millions of apartments — and the fallout is only getting started. Mayor Zohran Mamdani kept his biggest campaign promise, but now landlords say they may have to hand the keys back to the banks, tens of thousands of rent-stabilized apartments are sitting empty, and a judge is digging through City Hall’s text messages to decide if the vote was rigged.

In this video, we break down the NYC rent freeze: who really wins, who really pays, and why renters who DON’T live in rent-stabilized apartments could end up with the bill. You’ll meet a Washington Heights landlord whose grandfather fled Cuba to build the family business, see the empty apartments the law left behind, hear what Mayor Mamdani says about the lawsuit, and find out why President Trump warned these buildings could turn into “ghettos and slums.” The judge is expected to rule before the end of the year. Should the rent freeze stand, or be thrown out?

Following New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s fulfillment of his central campaign promise to institute a rent freeze, a massive debate has erupted over the long-term impact on the city’s housing market. Critics and online commentators have widely circulated claims that “300,000 face losing their homes” as an immediate fallout of the policy.

The rent freeze was officially approved in a 7–1 vote by the NYC Rent Guidelines Board. The decision effectively caps rents for one-year and two-year leases across approximately one million rent-stabilized apartments from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027.

The economic arguments surrounding this policy highlight a sharp divide between tenant advocates and housing providers. Chair Chantella Mitchell and tenant advocacy groups defended the decision as a necessary shield for low-income New Yorkers struggling against an acute affordability crisis. Supporters argue it prevents immediate displacement in a market where market-rate rents have hit record highs. Property owners, real estate groups, and the board member who resigned in protest (Christina Smyth) counter that a flat freeze completely ignores sharply rising building operational costs, insurance premiums, and mortgage interest rates.

Market experts from organizations like the Cato Institute and real estate analysts at Realtor.com warn that the freeze could backfire on the broader housing ecosystem.

Rent-Stabilized Tenants – Gain short-term price predictability but face long-term risks of declining building maintenance and neglected repairs as landlords lose revenue.
Market-Rate Renters – Likely to face even higher prices. Landlords often raise rents on non-regulated units to compensate for losses on stabilized units, further restricting housing inventory.
Small Property Owners – Face severe financial strain or potential foreclosure, which could lead to building abandonment or consolidation by corporate institutional buyers.

Recognizing the massive supply shortfall—estimated by housing experts to be around 500,000 units—Mayor Mamdani has paired the freeze with an aggressive development strategy. He recently unveiled a $22 billion housing plan (part of a broader 10-year, $100 billion proposal) aimed at constructing 200,000 new affordable units and accelerating the municipal permitting process.

The policy’s long-term survival remains uncertain. Multiple landlord coalitions have mounted legal challenges against the Rent Guidelines Board. Additionally, judicial scrutiny has intensified; a state judge recently ordered the Mamdani administration to turn over internal communications regarding potential inappropriate coordination or predetermined bias within the board.
