Recent studies have shed new light on the complex dynamics of Earth’s rotation, both in its outer and inner layers. A joint study by Chinese and international researchers, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, explored the Earth’s rotational deceleration from 700 million to 200 million years ago. The research discovered that the Earth’s rotation slowed in a step-like pattern, influenced mainly by tidal dissipation and other geological factors like mantle convection and tectonic movements. This slowdown led to an increase in the Earth’s day length by about 2.2 hours and coincided with significant evolutionary events such as the Cambrian explosion and the Permian-Triassic extinction.
Complementing this, a study from the University of Southern California (USC) has confirmed that Earth’s inner core, which also plays a critical role in the planet’s rotational dynamics, has experienced a slowdown in its rotation. According to this research, published recently, the rotation of Earth’s inner core—which typically rotates faster than the planet’s surface—has slowed down, potentially leading to changes in Earth’s magnetic field and impacting seismic activities. This finding aligns with the broader observation of Earth’s rotational changes and provides new insights into the complex interactions between the Earth’s inner and outer layers.
Both studies contribute to a growing body of evidence suggesting that Earth’s rotational dynamics are subject to a variety of influences, from tidal forces and climate change to internal geological processes.
