For clarity,.. the Shuttle did NOT explode!
The failed O-ring allowed super heated gases to breach the side case of the booster, which then burned through Field-Joint #7, one of the connection points of the the strut holding the shuttle to the large center fuel tank.
When the joint burned through, the shuttle become unstable in relation to the center fuel tank which the automated flight controls tried to compensate for, making the control oscillations worse and worse, until other field joints failed, allowing the shuttle to violently swing from the center fuel tank.
At this point two thing occurred simultaneously,…. the shuttle was now moving at a high Yaw to it’s axis of motion inducing aerodynamic stress that were far greater then the shuttle was designed for or could handle, this then pulled the center fuel tank off it’s parallel travel path also inducing aerodynamic stress that were far greater then design limits.
The fuel tank then “tore open” as the shuttle also was ripped apart by the asymmetric side loading (NOT moving like a dart through the air, but like a sideways football).
The fuel dump immediately ignited by the still burning engine plums,… all occurring at all most the same instant, to give the appearance of if “Exploding”.
It did NOT explode,…. both the Center-Fuel-Tank,… and the Shuttle were simply ripped apart by not moving through the air like a perfectly aligned dart, as the spilled fuel immediately atomized in the on-rushing air and was ignited by the engines tail flame.
And yes,… this kind of result was KNOWN by both NASA and Morton-Thiokol YEARS before it finally did occur as predicted.
They should have been charged with murder. – JD
