Bishops elect new treasurer, committee chairs at Baltimore meeting

Baltimore, Md., Nov 12, 2024 / 17:30 pm (CNA).

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops on Tuesday elected Archbishop Bernard Hebda of St. Paul and Minneapolis to serve as its next treasurer and also elected five other new committee chairs.

Meeting at their annual fall assembly in Baltimore, the bishops chose Hebda over Bishop David Malloy of Rockford, Illinois, by a vote of 156-84. Hebda has served as archbishop in St. Paul and Minneapolis since March 2016.

In other votes:

Bishop Brendan J. Cahill of Victoria, Texas, was elected chairman of the Committee on Migration over Bishop Joseph J. Tyson of Yakima, Washington, by a vote of 155-85.

Auxiliary Bishop Michael G. Woost of Cleveland was elected chairman of the Committee on Divine Worship over Archbishop Alexander K. Sample of Portland, Oregon, by a vote of 128-112.

Archbishop Shelton J. Fabre of Louisville, Kentucky, was elected in a 158-81 vote to serve as chairman of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development over Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney of Paterson, New Jersey. 

Bishop Ronald A. Hicks of Joliet, Illinois, was elected chairman of the Committee on Clergy, Consecrated Life, and Vocations over Bishop Juan Miguel Betancourt, SEMV, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Hartford, Connecticut, by a vote of 145-84. 

Bishop Edward J. Burns of Dallas will serve as chairman of the Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life, and Youth. Burns was chosen over Bishop James D. Conley of Lincoln, Nebraska, by a vote of 147-91.

Hebda will serve as treasurer-elect and the other five bishops will serve as chairmen-elect on their respective committees for one year before beginning their three-year terms at the conclusion of the bishops’ 2025 fall plenary assembly.
