‘God is good’: Faith and love for family on display at 2026 Oscars
“God is good. God is good,” said Michael B. Jordan in his speech after winning the 2026 Oscar for Best Actor for the film “Sinners.”
Jordan also highlighted the presence and company of his family: “Hey mom, wassup? You all know how I feel about my mom, and my dad is here. … He flew all the way from Ghana to be here; my sister, my brother is here, my family,” he added.
After thanking those who made the film possible and the rest of the cast, the actor paid tribute to other African American “giants” who have previously won the Oscar — such as Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker, and Will Smith.
In 2020, in an interview with Essence, Jordan highlighted the importance of his faith in his life: “Grew up in church. I’ve always been the person to ask, ‘Why, why, why? Where’s the proof?’ I’ve always believed in a higher power, something bigger than myself. I think you would be foolish to not feel that way.”
Australian actress Nicole Kidman revealed that for an event like the Oscars — where she presented the Best Picture award (“One Battle After Another”) alongside Ewan McGregor to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the 2001 film “Moulin Rouge” — she prepares by going to church.
“It might sound crazy, but I go to church in the morning,” she said. When asked why this is important, Kidman said: “It centers me; it’s what I do on a Sunday.”
Although Kidman and Keith Urban recently divorced after 19 years of marriage, back in 2019 she shared that they used to attend church as a family, along with their two daughters.
“Keith has his own beliefs but he comes, too. I had a very Catholic grandmother, and I was raised praying, so that had massive impact,” she said in an interview with Vanity Fair.
‘The beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart’
Jessie Buckley — Oscar winner for Best Actress for her role in “Hamnet” — moved everyone at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles by highlighting her experience as a mother to an 8-month-old daughter with her husband, Freddie Sorensen, whom she married in 2023.
After thanking her parents for “teaching us to dream and not to be defined by expectations,” the Irish actress turned to her husband: “You, Fred, I love you, man. You’re the most incredible dad and my best friend, and I want to have 20,000 more babies with you. I do, I do.”
Buckley celebrated motherhood during her Oscar acceptance speech, when, speaking about her baby, she went on to share: “I love you, and I love being your mom, and I can’t wait to discover life beside you.”
After highlighting the importance of understanding “the capacity of a mother’s love,” the Irish actress noted that Sunday was Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom and thus dedicated her award “to the beautiful chaos of a mother’s heart.”
