He previously served as Archbishop of St. Louis and as Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, the Church’s highest judicial court, before being elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010. He is also the founder of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke is a high-ranking American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church, widely recognized as a leading canonical scholar and prominent voice of traditionalism within the global Church. Elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, Burke has spent decades defending traditional Catholic liturgy and doctrine. He is known for frequently celebrating the Tridentine (Traditional Latin) Mass and has often stood as a prominent conservative figure regarding the interpretation of Church law and modern ecclesiastical practices. 

Cardinal Burke served as the Bishop of the Diocese of La Crosse from 1995 to 2004, where he founded the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He was subsequently appointed Archbishop of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, serving from 2004 to 2008. In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, the Holy See’s highest judicial court. He served in this role until 2014, when Pope Francis appointed him Patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a position he held until 2023. 

Cardinal Burke has consistently championed traditional Catholic teachings on sanctity of life, marriage, and the sacraments. He has been an outspoken critic of certain progressive shifts inside the Church, notably raising concerns over the Synod on Synodality and expressing reservations regarding aspects of Pope Francis’s apostolic exhortation Amoris laetitia. Despite his vocal defense of orthodox positions. , he continues to lead major public prayer events and deliver reflections globally, such as presiding over international Rosary rallies
