Fang not a canine on Agriochoerus latifrons

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

LRT scores for
Agriochoerus latifrons (Fig 1) were recently revised when I noticed the upper fang articulated in front of the lower fang, the opposite of all other mammals. That is because that upper fang was an incisor and the upper canine was absent, creating a diastema, as in deer, elephants and other ungulates.

In addition,  the jugal (cyan) has an overlapping lacrimal (tan, Fig 1) that was previously overlooked. A similar Bauplan can be seen in Meniscotherium (Fig 2).

This is what happens
when you question everything. If you do so frequently enough, eventually you will learn something that others had glossed over.

Agriochoerus latifrons
(Leidy 1869; Late Eocene to Oligocene, 38–16mya, skeleton) has a distinctly different tooth pattern with large lateral incisors (convergent with Elephas) and a diastema. Here the canine is absent and this taxon nests with Meniscotherium.
