Eocene Lophiodontidae go back to tiny Late Cretaceous ancestors in the LRT
Eocene Lophiodontidae are traditional chalicothere relatives.
After testing in the LRT the Lophiodon (Fig 1) clade nests within Marsupialia, as recovered earlier here and here.
After housekeeping
this clade now has a tiny Late Cretaceous ancestor from Mongolia: Maelestes (Fig 1), a specimen that has taphonomically lost the high cranial crest of later relatives.
Note the tip of the dentary has anteriorly oriented incisors in all these taxa (Fig 1).

Maelestes gobiensis
(Wible et al. 2007; late Cretaceous, 75-71 mya; PSS-MAE 607) was originally considered a Eutherian, but not a placental. Maelestes has epipubes, a marsupial trait. This poorly preserved taxon (Fig 1) now nests with the Late Cretaceous marsupial, Asioryctes basal to Lophiodontidae, including Lophiodon, Thomashuxleya and Periphragnis (Fig 1).
According to Wikipedia – Lophiodontidae
“Lophiodontidae is a family of browsing, herbivorous, mammals in the Perissodactyla suborder Ancylopoda that show long, curved and cleft claws.[citation needed] They lived in Southern Europe during the Eocene epoch. Previously thought to be related to tapirs, it is now thought that they were most likely related to early chalicotheres, although they are distinct from that group.”
In the LRT Lophiodon and kin (Fig 1) are marsupials, not chalicothere ‘likely’ relatives.
