Sinonyx compared to Eolophiodon
Another short GIF movie
demonstrates the similar morphologies of Sinonyx and Eolophiodon (Fig 1), a new pair of taxa recovered by the large reptile tree (LRT, 2322 taxa).
Seems obvious on hindsight.
Even so, this is a novel hypothesis of interrelationships that took awhile to recover.

Figure 1. Eolophiodon compared to Sinonyx. The profile is nearly identical. The dorsal and palatal views are nearly identical. The mandible is different. GIF movies like this are a good way to directly compare images, working like the Blink Comparator that helped discover the minor planet Pluto.
These two taxa nest between
Dissacus and Mesonyx which are, middling taxa between tiny Ocepeia and giant Andrewsarchus, in a largely overlooked clade – all herbivores, often with fangs, as in hippos. Most do not have such narrow skulls.
Sinonyx jiashanensis
(Zhou et al. 1995; late Paleocene, 55 mya; 28 cm skull length) was also originally considered a mesonychid. Here Sinonyx nests with Andrewsarchus. It had 11 teeth (x4) including 4 blunt molars and a tall sagittal crest over the narrow cranium.
Eolophiodon laboriense
(Robinet et al. 2015; early Eocene; MHNT.PAL.2010.19.3.1, scale bar = 5cm) is widely considered a smaller relative of Lophiodon and living tapirs with a very narrow skull. Here it nests instead with Sinonyx.
