Gulo, the wolverine,
(Figs 1–3) is what bears and sabertooths looked like before they evolved greater size.

Speothos, the bush dog,
(Figs 1–3) is what lions, hyaenas and wolves looked like before they evolved greater size, according to the large reptile tree (LRT, 2323 taxa).

Both share a long list of traits,
including a color scheme (Fig 1) with that odd and distinctive black ventral fur.

Their skeletons and skulls
(Figs 2, 3) likewise share a long list of traits. What they don’t share is location. Wolverines are found all over the Northern Hemisphere. Bush dogs are restricted to South America.

Despite obvious similarities,
this may be the first time these two taxa (Figs 1–3) have been linked. In the LRT these two carnivores are separated only by the sabertooth clade with extinct Machaeroides + Hopolophoneus and extant Melursus + Tremarctos at its base.

That means both taxa (Figs 1–3) are late survivors of ancient radiations.

You’ll find genomic cladograms for the clade Carnivora are completely different from the trait-testing in the LRT, partly because gene testing omits fossil taxa. That’s why the LRT was created: to dispel myths generated from untenable genomic analyses.
