Mesonychids move to Marsupialia in the LRT

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

This clade move was anticipated, but took time to come together.
Arctocyon (Fig 1) nests with Sinonyx (Fig 1) and Eolophiodon in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2322 taxa, subset Fig 2). Giant Andrewsarchus (Fig 3) and Mesonyx (Fig 3) are also clade members.

Figure 1. Sinonyc and Arctocyon shown to the same scale. Sinonyx has a diastema and notch in the ventral maxilla rim. Large jaw muscles fill the lateral temporal fenestrae.

Now these taxa
(Fig 3) all move to the Preplacental 1 clade within Marsupialia (Fig 2).

This is a fragile move. It could change someday, but seems to be logical at present.

Figure 3. Subset of the LRT recovered by PAUP of taxa basal to Placentalia 1. These include Mesonyx and Vulpavus (see figure 2). This is a fragile hypothesis of interrelationships = subject to change.

Several Vulpavus-like taxa
are shown together to scale here (Fig 3). Most are from the Paleocene to Eocene.

Vulpavus palustris
(Marsh 1871; Bridgerian, Early to Middle Eocene, AMNH 11497 neotype, close to Vulpavus profectus, AMNH 12626) was considered a primitive miacid, a mink-like basal member of the Carnivora/Placentalia 1 (Fig 2).

On a side note regarding Methods:
Gobihyus and Chriacus have been removed from the LRT matrix based on too few skull and post-cranial bones to score from. These two water opossum taxa are now colored red on the LRT, associated with more complete taxa that remain in the matrix.
