Kinkajous vs primates vs otters

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

According to Wikipedia – Kinkajou,
“The kinkajou resembles neotropical monkeys in having a prehensile tail and big, forward-facing eyes, but has a different dentition and heavy fur on the soles of the feet.”

To that resemblance
the Middle Eocene primate from Texas, Smilodectes (Fig 1), shares a long list of skull traits with the extnt kinkajou, Potos (Fig 1).

As noted by Wikipedia, and confirmed by the LRT, similarities are by convergence,

Closer relative to the kinkajou, Potos
(Fig 2), according to the LRT, include bears, weasels and otters, like Lontra (Fig 2) sporting lower longer skulls.

Lontra canadensis
(von Schreber 1777, Gray 1843; 84cm in length) is the extant river otter, nesting between the mink and sea otter.

Smilodectes gracilis
(Wortman 1903; Middle Eocene, North America, 55mya, 27cm snout-vent length) is traditionally considered an adapid (lemur-sister) primate. Here it is transitional to higher New World monkeys, tarsiers, Old World monkeys and apes, in that order. It is derived from a sister to Notharctus.

Potos flavus
(von Schreber 1774) is the extant kinkajou a tropical American relative of the North American raccoon. This fruit-eater has flat molars and a short, primate like muzzle. The tail is prehensile.

At present
the prehensile tail evolved several times by convergence and was lost just as often, again by convergence.
