Hippos and their ancestors to scale
Turns out
one of the largest hippos of all time is extant. Fossil taxa were smaller to much smaller (Fig 1). Eocene Oodectes is a small oreodont at the base of clades leading to the hippo clade.

According to Science Daily:
“analysis has linked today’s hippos to a lineage of anthracotheres,”
In the LRT anthracotheres are pig relatives, not related to hippos.
According to Wikipedia – Hippopotamus
“Despite their physical resemblance to pigs and other terrestrial even-toed ungulates, the closest living relatives of the hippopotamids are cetaceans from which they diverged about 55 million years ago.”
In the LRT eight nodes of desmostylians nest between the hippo clade (Fig 1) and mysticetes (baleen whales). Odontocetes (toothed whales) had a separate ancestry.

Wikipedia does not include
the list of hippo ancestors recovered by the LRT (Fig 1). So, once again, paleontologists left a phylogenetic vacuum waiting to be filled by someone… anyone… an amateur.
Being in the right place at the right time with a raft of data coming in from the Internet makes it possible for the LRT to test 2325 trait-based taxa. Now it needs a competing study, or two, or three, to test hypothetical interrelationships recovered here.
Corrections continue.
