Tupaia joins Microcebus at the origin of bats
I wrote this blogpost a few weeks ago, but kept it tucked away.
Today it is finally published online.
Recent housekeeping in the LRT
(large reptile tree, 2327 taxa) moved a few taxa about. Among them Tupaia (Fig 1) and Ptilocercus, two extant tree shrews moved closer to the bat branch of the LRT. Previously the extant mouse lemur, Microcebus (Fig 1), was the basalmost bat taxon, where it remains.
As in pterosaurs and birds, the wings came last in the clade Chiroptera.
Figure 1. Tupaia, Microcebus and an undescribed Green River bat (GRB) to scale. GRB enlarged to match the size of Microcebus. Here again, phylogenetic miniaturization attended the origin of a new clade.

Bat experts
have been seeking a fossil basal bat with shorter fingers while ignoring extant wingless taxa that document even earlier stages.
Lesson for today: Stop wishing for your preconception and use what you have.
That’s the value of the LRT: so many taxa (2327 today) that one or two have to nest basal to bats in a proximal node. Let the cladogram do the work.
