2025 ‘Archaeopteryx’ paper suffers from taxon exclusion

Foth et al 2025
described a set of pre-flapping ‘Archaeopteryx‘ arm and leg bones from the Late Jurassic Mörnsheim Formation in Germany. specimen: SMNK PAL 10000a.

‘Pre-flapping’ is indicatee because
the coracoid was short, round and mobile (Fig 1), like a basal theropod coracoid. By contrast in flapping birds and pterosaurs the coracoid  is tall, narrow and locked-down on the sternum.

Bats use their long clavicle as a substitute.

Figure 1. Coracoid of SMNK PAL 10000 with DGS colors added. This is not an elongate locked down coracoid common to birds. And why present this for publication upside-down?

A new Late Jurassic ‘bird’ is always good news,
even if most of the skeleton is not present and it’s not a bird – because it did not flap. If the authors were going to run a phylogenetic analysis, why did thy only include one other Archaeopteryx‘? – and not nine others as in the large reptile tree  (LRT, 2330 taxa, subset Fig 3).

The authors reported, “The lengths of the humerus and ulna are most similar to those
of the Munich specimen of Archaeopteryx.” See figure 2.

Figure 2. Alcmonavis to scale with its sister in the LRT, the Munich specimen. Note the elongate coracoid on the Munich specimen indicating it was a flapping taxon.

Archaeopteryx bavarica
the Munich specimen – BSp 1999 I 50 (Fig 2) nests near the base of the Scansoriopterygidae, derived from a sister to specimen #12 in the LRT. Both need new generic names.

So the Munich specimen (Fig 2) is not related to the SMNK 10,000 specimen (Fig 1). The coracoids are fundamentally different.

Note: some Early Cretaceous birds reverse the coracoid shape as they forego flying and flapping. So, let’s wait for the expanded phylogenetic analysis.

Figure 3. Subset of the LRT focuscing on Solnhofen birds. many labeled with the wastebasket taxon, Archaeopteryx.

Archaeopteryx has become a wastebasket taxon
in an attempt to glom on to some of its fame and headline-making ability.

Workers: stop chasing headlines.
Concentrate on the science. Add = don’t omit pertinent taxa.

And stop presenting specimens upside-down (Fig 1). Why did they do that? IDK.
