… next to Sus, the pig.
No surprises here (Figs 1–3).

Babyrousa celebensis
(Deninger 1909, 1m length) is the extant North Sulawesi babirusa. The unique upper canines rotate dorsally and curl back toward the eyes, evidently as a secondary sexual character, much larger in males…

… perhaps acting like deer antlers.

First described in 1909
this odd arrangement of inverted saberteeth shows what males will do to attract less adorned females (Fig 1) when they have no cash, no car, no mansion and no looks – but they do live on an island.

Figure 3. Pig skull, genus: Sus. Compare to figure 2, especially the canines. Nothing else changes much.

Of what use are oversize canines in
deer, pigs, walruses, or cat-like super-wolverines like Smilodon? Before you say ‘attraction”, both genders of Smilodon had oversize canines (as everyone knows).

IMHO = it is still attraction. Big, bigger, biggest = visual stimulus.
Lions, tigers and cheetahs remind us that big is big enough to snare prey.
