Wärtsilä to Supply Electric Propulsion for Battery-Electric Ferries in San Francisco
Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply the electric propulsion systems for the United States’ first fully battery-electric, zero-emission high-speed passenger ferries. These three vessels, each accommodating 150 passengers, will operate in the San Francisco Bay area, connecting Treasure Island and Mission Bay to the Downtown San Francisco ferry terminal. This initiative is part of the San Francisco Bay Ferry’s Rapid Electric Emission Free (REEF) Ferry Program, aimed at transitioning the fleet to zero-emission propulsion technology.
The ferries will be constructed by All American Marine (AAM) and are designed to meet USCG Subchapter T standards. Each vessel will measure 100 feet in length, with a 26-foot beam and a 5.9-foot draft, and will be powered by dual 625-kilowatt electric motors, enabling speeds of up to 24 knots.
Wärtsilä’s comprehensive scope of supply includes the energy and power management system (EPMS), integrated automation system (IAS), batteries, DC Hub, transformers, electric motors, and shore power supply. Equipment deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2026, with the first ferry expected to enter service in early 2027.
