Alcidedorbignya compared to Messelogale (aka Miacis) in the LRT
In the latest iteration of the LRT
the archaic ungulate Alcidedorbignya is a phylogenetically reduced pantodont. Messelogale is its new LRT sister. Nearly toothless Metacheiromys is a proximal outgroup.
This migration took place while working on basal marsupials in the large reptile tree.
So this new interrelationship is both novel and fragile.
Alcidedorbignya inopinata
(Muizon and Marshall 1992 Muizon et al 2015; MHNC 8372, Early Paleocene, 64 mya; scale bar is 2cm) was originally considered a basal pantodont (Condylartha) close to Pantolambda and the origin of ungulates and digging placentals. The rostrum is curved with a smaller naris. Long hooves are former claws on a semiplantigrade manus.

These early Palaeocene placentals(?),
and many others, are all small, arboreal-transitioning-to-terrestrial and thus similar to one another in size and overall morphology. Skulls, hands and feet provide the best phylogenetic clues.
This appears to be a novel hypothesis of interrelationships.
