Toyota’s GR LH₂ Racing Concept represents a bold move into liquid-hydrogen racing tech, building on prior hydrogen-engine projects, and celebrating a storied motorsport legacy—all at the heart of the Le Mans stage.
Toyota unveiled the GR LH2 Racing Concept, a liquid‑hydrogen (LH₂) fuel test car, at the H2 Village during the 93rd Le Mans 24 Hours (June 11–15, 2025). This prototype is based on the existing GR010 HYBRID hypercar platform currently racing in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Hydrogen Tech Through Motorsport
This project builds on Toyota’s ongoing hydrogen-engine initiatives:
- Since 2021, Rookie Racing’s Corolla ran on gaseous hydrogen in Japan’s Super Taikyu series; by 2023, it transitioned to liquid hydrogen.
- In 2022, the GR Yaris H₂ completed demonstration runs at the FIA World Rally Championship’s Ypres Rally.
- Also in 2023, a hydrogen‑engine Corolla lapped the Circuit de la Sarthe, and Toyota introduced the GR H₂ Racing Concept, previewing a hydrogen class at Le Mans.
Technical Specs & Testing Plans
- The GR LH₂ Racing Concept combines a hydrogen-fueled engine with a hybrid system, fueled by liquid hydrogen.
- It measures approximately 5,100 mm long and 2,050 mm wide.
- Toyota plans to conduct future track testing to advance hydrogen powertrain development and support the broader hydrogen infrastructure.
Commemorative Livery & Le Mans Heritage
The debut also celebrates Toyota’s 40-year history at Le Mans. Two GR010 HYBRIDs (#7 & #8) are running special liveries:
- #7 (Conway/Kobayashi/de Vries) in red‑white pays tribute to the 1998 TS020 “GT‑One.”
- #8 (Buemi/Hartley/Hirakawa) wears matte black with the GR logo, symbolizing Toyota’s “Prototype” philosophy and their “hate to lose” spirit.
This marks a significant step toward carbon-neutral motorsport, using liquid hydrogen to explore sustainable performance racing. The GR LH2 concept signals Toyota’s ambition to accelerate hydrogen adoption—across production, transport, and infrastructure—leveraging motorsport as a development platform.
