‘Fast and furry’ YouTube video from Dr Polaris
A recent YouTube video by Dr Polaris
chronicled ‘The earliest evolution of mammals’, but reported, “the emergence of true mammals is ‘another source of contention’.
My comments follow:
Nice presentation! You reported what many authors presented. The few corrections below are based on adding taxa to phylogenetic analyses in order to minimize taxon exclusion, a common problem in published papers.
Most primitive Monotreme: Megazostrodon (Late Triassic).
Most primtive Marsupial: Morganucodon (Late Triassic).
Castorocauda is a late-surviving cynodont close to Prozostrodon. Not a mammal. Same with Haldanodon.
Docodontids are monotremes.
Docofossor is not a docodont mole, but a relative of Notoryctes, an extant marsupial mole.
Shenshou is a multituberculate nesting with Jeholbaatar.
Shuotherium is indeed a docodontid within Monotremata.
Haramiyavia is a pre-mammal cynodont. Arboroharamiya is another multituberculate, a clade that includes the living aye-aye, Daubentonia, so multis were Jurassic placentals.
The LRT does not recover a clade ‘Allotheria’. Just Monotremes, then Marsupials, then placentals had five separate origins. Wortman 1902 reported three.
@ 9:24 you report the emergence of true mammals is ‘another source of contention’. The LRT uses the last common ancestor method for making that determination. See taxa listed above. Not always apparent in adult mammals, single tooth replacement = toothless infants = breast feeding = Mammalia.
Figure 1. The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus) compared to tiny Jurassic Hadrocodium, and later Ernanodon, Vincelestes and Ambolestes, the latter two from the Early Cretaceous.
Hadrocodium (Fig 1) nests at the base of the early marsupial clade that gave rise to the Tasmanian Devil, Sarcophilus (Fig 1). It is a juvenile with some tooth replacement present, so adults would have been a little larger than a paperclip.
You may find it interesting that mammals, dinos, pteros, turtles and crocs all developed fur, feathers, fibers, hard scutes and scales in the Late Triassic. Coincidentally biting flies and other insect disease vectors appeared about then, too.
