Continental drift video focuses on the intolerance of anti-drift scientists
Rob Butler, the narrator,
brings out the history of intolerance (in detail) against the continental drift hypothesis.
My comments mirror his.
In a similar vein, paleontology in the years 2000 to 2025 has shown intolerance (with vitriol) towards new hypotheses based on simply adding more taxa to phylogenetic analyses – while at the same time embracing deep time genomics, which don’t employ fossil taxa and recover sister clades that don’t match trait analyses. Strange that paleontologists would choose to omit fossils in order to study genes. But they do. Odd that their curiosity does not extend to adding pertinent taxa to their own trait analyses, when only fossils are tested. But they don’t.
Take for example the origin of pterosaurs topic. A timeline of several years of studies on that topic is presented here: https://pterosaurheresies.wordpress.com/2021/09/03/timeline-of-pterosaur-origin-studies/
IMHO it goes back to reputation = $$ = filling lecture halls with students and selling them textbooks. That may be the base reason why large numbers of professors are loathe to test new insights, even though that’s their job. If novel ideas were to be embraced, that would mean they were teaching last semester’s students bits of rubbish here and there.
The birds are dinosaurs ‘debate’ is a case in point. We knew of Archaeopteryx (a feathered dinosaur with wings) since the 1870s and Huxley’s hypothesis. Crickets. Then in the 1970s Yale professor John Ostrom sought to resurrect Huxley’s hypothesis. Again, crickets, except for a few of Ostrom’s students. It still took another 25+ years for ‘birds are dinosaurs’ to become consensus thinking. Now paleontologists are patting themselves on the back for promoting this wonderful insight, a century+ too late.
