While the resemblance to terrestrial wood is striking, alternative geological explanations (such as sedimentary layering, ventifacts, or erosional jointing) must be rigorously tested. Further data from Raman spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and nanoscale imaging would help to constrain the origin of these features. Until then, the biological hypothesis remains a valid and testable scientific question.
