Some of the research in the new paper: ‘Adding Further Pieces to the Synchronization Puzzle:
QBO, Bimodality, and Phase Jumps’ from Stefani et al at the German research institute HZDR ties in with Talkshop work, either already published or shortly to appear. Their work uses findings from earlier varve studies. We’ll pick a few bits of interest to us, specifically around the solar cycle period, and see what emerges from them.

We looked at solar cycle bimodality last year, here — Tropical Timings: solar cycle length analysis – the bi-modality question. So we won’t dwell on that at the moment. Phase jumps won’t be featured in this post either (but see the varve study by Vos et al (2004) cited by HZDR, which is the source for some of their results).
The QBO (quasi-biennial oscillation) parts of the HZDR study will be examined in more detail in a forthcoming post. For now we’ll just look at this statement:
‘The main part of this paper is then dedicated to the emergence of the QBO and the consequences following from it. Our extended dynamo model will be shown to result in a strong peak at 1.723 years (629.29 days), together with two neighboring peaks at 1.598 and 1.868 years which arise as side-bands from the modulation with the 22.14-year Hale cycle.’
The first point is that 1.598 years means the period of a Venus-Earth conjunction (nearly 584 days). The paper: Adding Further Pieces to the Synchronization Puzzle: QBO, Bimodality, and Phase Jumps uses the half-period, stated as 292 days. This period stands on its own but can be linked directly to the solar cycle, as we showed here:
Jupiter, Earth and Venus’ tropical alignments point to the mean solar cycle length. There we quoted Stefani: “What we see is complete parallelism with the planets over the course of 90 cycles.”
We agree. The 90 solar cycles in 996 years equate to 623 Venus-Earth (V-E) conjunctions. A Hale cycle (see below) = 2 consecutive solar cycles, with alternating magnetic orientation (N-S and S-N), so 45 Hale in 996 years.
The second point follows, i.e. the other two periods (1.723 and 1.868 years) can be directly linked to the solar cycle via the V-E period. Here TY = tropical years.
— The 1.868 side-band is the beat period (or frequency) of the mean *solar cycle* (11.0666 TY) and V-E conjunction:
996 TY/(623-90) = 996/533 = 1.86867~ TY.
— The 1.723 year ‘strong peak’ is the beat period of the mean *Hale cycle* (22.1333 TY) and V-E conjunction:
996 TY/(623-45) = 996/578 = 1.72318~ TY.
We have another way of arriving at 1.723 or 1.724 involving lunar numbers, but that’s also for another post as it relates to the lunar nodal cycle and other periods not featured in the Stefani paper.
Note that the Stefani/HZDR paper uses actual data and results from varve studies, so can’t be described as purely theoretical.
Some other aspects of the paper will be discussed at the Talkshop soon.
