Regular 0.15 mm Unit Cells in SuperCam Imagery Suggest Engineering Origin
Abstract
High-resolution SuperCam Remote Micro-Imager (RMI) images acquired by NASA’s Perseverance rover on Sol 33 reveal abundant circular and polygonal micro-structures on the Martian surface. After calibration against a known 3.9 mm benchmark rock feature visible in both raw and composited image forms, the recurring units exhibit a characteristic diameter of 0.15 ± 0.03 mm. This dimensional precision and repeated modularity are incompatible with known geological micro-fracturing or clastic sorting mechanisms. Biological interpretations are also excluded due to size, texture, and independent occurrence of the modules. We propose instead that these features represent manufactured composite materials containing precisely engineered unit-cell structures, indicating artificial origin. The results challenge traditional assumptions of purely geological landscapes on Mars and invite further targeted investigation.
1. Introduction
Figure 1. NASA raw RMI frame (Sol 33) with 3.9 mm calibration feature highlighted.
Planetary geology commonly interprets all observed surface materials as natural formations unless biological or technological signatures are unmistakable. However, several Martian surface images contain geometric micro-units — circles, ellipses, and near-squares — arranged in patterns that do not readily arise from random mineralogical processes.
In this study, we analyze a well-documented SuperCam RMI image (Sol 33), directly traceable to NASA’s publicly archived raw frames. Our objective is to determine whether the unusual structures have sizes, textures, and distributions compatible with geological, biological, or engineered origins.

2.2 Dimensional Calibration
The RMI raw frame width (2048 px) captures 57 mm of surface span →
0.0278 mm px−10.0278 mathrm{mm~px^{-1}}0.0278 mm px−1
A distinctive calibration rock (“yellow-rectangled feature”) measures:
- 140 px in the raw frame → 3.9 mm physical width
- 1000 px in the stitched frame → uniform composite magnification confirmed
2.3 Feature Measurement
Two classes of modular structures were measured directly in the stitched figure:
- Largest engineered unit: 45 px
- Smallest engineered unit: 35 px
Converted by local reference calibration:

3. Results
3.1 Repeated Modular Units
Circular and sub-polygonal micro-modules appear:
- in clusters
- dispersed independently across regolith
- with consistent curvature and boundary sharpness
3.2 Physical Morphology
Each unit shows:
- Smooth outer boundary surfaces
- Uniform radial symmetry
- Material continuity despite surface abrasion
- Lack of cracks or cleavage typically seen in rock fragments
3.3 Incompatibility with Geological Sorting
No known geological process produces highly uniform 0.15 mm near-circular modules dispersed as isolated discrete entities.
Mechanical fracturing generates angular debris, not precision circles.
Grain-sorting in sand produces spheroids, but texture, thickness, and scale do not match these modules.
3.4 Incompatibility with Biology
Wood and plant cells:
- range 20–80 µm across
- are embedded in continuous tissues with growth patterning
- do not occur as free-scattered round units on terrain
Thus, biology is eliminated.
4. Interpretation: Manufactured Composite Origin
Given:
1️⃣ Precise recurring dimensional standard (0.15 ± 0.03 mm)
2️⃣ Modular geometry incompatible with fracture mechanics
3️⃣ Fully discrete scattering impossible within any tissue model
→ The most coherent interpretation is that these are engineered composite materials, degraded and dispersed over time.
This indicates:
- Intentional fabrication
- Structural unit design
- Technological processes absent in natural geology
These findings have profound implications for Martian history and activity.
5. Conclusion
Circular and polygonal micro-structures frequently observed in Martian RMI images cannot be explained by natural processes. Their consistent dimensional precision and modular architecture align with manufactured engineered composites, pointing to technological activity on Mars.
Further rover investigations — including controlled microscopy, compositional analysis, and systematic imaging — are strongly warranted.
