Glenlee DCNN6745 – Yet more proof the Met Office is unfit for purpose. I challenge them to defend these atrocious standards.

Glenlee was a long standing weather station near St Johns Town of Dalry on the edge of the Galloway Forest in the county of Dumfries and Galloway. It was closed 1/11/2013 due to the development of its immediate area. It was also so appallingly maintained that it demonstrably makes a complete mockery of Met Office claims to quality stewardship of its assets and calls their competence in serious question.

Whatever or wherever the original location of Glenlee weather station was is uncertain. Although the CEDA archives show a “Start Date” of 1887 there are also manual copies going back to 1881 and the reality is that this site probably predated even then. The balance of probability, however, indicates the station continuously operated from the same location. In the 1930s the Galloway Hydro Electric Power Scheme created a number of power plants with Glenlee being one. The Stevenson Screen came to be co-located as below.

This was obviously an undesirable location from the very start being directly in front of the Electricity substation – but that is actually a rellatively small factor compared to others. This is a wider angle view of the site.

Ignore the substation, ignore the stone walling, ignore the roadway and heaven forbid ignore the fact that this screen has not been repainted or even cleaned in possibly decades……..just look at the base of the stand. IT IS SET ON A CONCRETE SLAB.

And then it gets worse…….the opening door is supposed to be on the north elevation. THE DOOR OPENS TO THE EAST……. and was manually observed at 09:00 GMT daily i.e opening up the door to the sunrise!

This site is so bad it genuinely beggars belief. There are peer reviewed studies into lack of regular repainting of screens causing measurable distortions to temperature records.

The Met Office claims annual inspections of screens and, where and when applicable, biennial repainting. This was clearly untrue. Glenlee was rarely, if ever, adequately maintained in the visible modern times. This begs the obvious question, if so little attention was being paid to the casing, what consideration was being given to the contents? It seems incredibly hard to believe that the thermometers and other instruments were being carefully monitored and properly maintained when nobody seems to even consider wiping the screen with a cloth.

WHAT RIGOROUS STANDARDS?????

If all the above seems “over the top” ranting, consider how the readings from this incredibly below acceptable standards site are used…….60 year rolling climate averages. Yes this junk pile is used as “proof” for climate scientists to demonstrate anthropogenic global warming.

I am not going to honour this site with period comparisons over its reporting period – such sites do not warrant serious attention, they are non-admissible evidence. What is admissible is this damning image below.

The Met Office must be held accountable for such shameful behaviour.
