An Egyptian–Chinese archaeological mission working at Karnak has uncovered a previously unrecorded “sacred lake” inside the Montu Temple precinct – an unusually well-preserved, man‑made reservoir that adds an unexpected new layer to one of Egypt’s most intensively studied temple complexes. The discovery is already being described by the team as significant because it appears to be the first sacred lake in Egypt to undergo a fully systematic scientific excavation, yielding rare “first-hand materials” for understanding how such ritual water features were built and used. reports Xinhua.

The newly uncovered basin lies west of the Temple of Maat (dedicated to Maat, the goddess associated with truth, justice, and cosmic order) and covers more than 50 square meters, according to the mission’s announcement. Archaeologists noted it had not appeared in earlier archives, suggesting it either remained buried or overlooked despite decades of work at Karnak.
