3,500-Year-Old Mycenaean Boar Tusk Helmets Found Near Pylos
A rare set of Mycenaean boar’s tusk helmets, the distinctive Bronze Age headgear famously described in a Homeric epic, has reportedly been uncovered in southwestern Greece near Pylos. A Helmet Built from Dozens of Tusks
Boar’s tusk helmets were constructed from many polished tusk slivers, typically sewn in rows onto a leather or cloth base and padded, creating a striking white, banded surface. According to the Greek City Times report, this kind of helmet could require tusks from 40 to 50 wild boars, underscoring how costly and socially “loud” the object would have been in Mycenaean society.
That scale of materials helps explain why these helmets turn up in high-status burial contexts and why they loom so large in later storytelling. They were practical in some respects, but they also functioned as portable proof that the wearer (or the family line) had the means to organize hunts, command resources, and commission specialist craftwork.
