Oxyaena now a big Early Eocene raccoon in the LRT

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The LRT was not the first
to notice the resemblance between Eocene Oxyaena and Procyon, the extant raccoon.

According to Wiki/Oxyaena:
“Oxyaena (“sharp hyena”) is an extinct genus of placental mammals from extinct subfamily Oxyaeninae within extinct family Oxyaenidae, that lived in Europe, Asia and North America (with most specimens being found in Colorado) during the early Eocene. The species were superficially cat or wolverine-like, with a flexible body 1 metre (3.3 ft) long, and short limbs.

“Because of their shape, early studies often compared them to cats, but this body form has evolved many times in small to medium-sized forest-dwelling predators and mixed feeders, such as viverrids, mustelids, and procyonids.”

“more recent work suggests that like modern raccoons, they may have been able to climb trees, swim, and make a living on the ground, but were not highly specialized in any direction.

“An analysis of the teeth shows they were generalized feeders, like most modern raccoons and bears, rather than hypercarnivores like modern cats.”

Take a look at Oxyaena to scale with Procyon.
Nasua, the extant coatimundi, is also related, but it retains a high parietal crest.

Smaller size and later appearance in Procyon
together with ’rounder’ = younger features indicate phylogenetic miniaturization = neotony = juvenile traits retained into adulthood = raising babies stage.

This one took awhile to decipher
partly because I did not score the premaxilla correctly based on a ‘complete’ skull drawing in lateral view that did not match the disarticulated pmx + mx drawing presented at the links above.
